He was born into a family of Christians‚ which consisted of his father‚ Domenico Colombo‚ his mother Susanna Fontanarossa‚ and his younger brother Bartholomew Colombo. Christopher and his brother served in the Portuguese Merchant Marine‚ which is where he learned many of his skills necessary for sailing.
