Christopher Columbus: A Hero Or Villain
In 1492 the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus set sail to try to find a faster route to India for the Spanish, but instead ended up in America. Along his voyage Columbus had many economical, social and religious influences.

The question being asked was, Columbus a hero or villain? In my personal belief Columbus was a villain. The reason Columbus was a villain to me was is because, when he and his men first arrived the indians were curious about who he was, they treated Columbus great, they gave him gifts. At first Columbus traded with them then he saw they wore golden objects. Then Columbus decides to take some of the indians as captives to force them to take them to their gold. An indian chief gave Columbus a golden mask but that

Throughout history there have been a number of people that have been celebrated as heroes, but some of their fame is controversial. Today Columbus is seen as a great man who had such an impact on the history of the America’s. He is only seen heroic for his journey to the New World “his famous journey lasting months to get from England to Cuba.” Accordingly Columbus was expecting to find a new route to get to India for trade. To many Columbus is seen as a man who did nothing but good for the world. When you look deeper into his colonization of the New World you will find the horrific details of the take over of the Native Americans. So therefore Christopher Columbus was more rather a villain than anything else.…

Christopher Columbus could be seen as both a hero and a villain. While Columbus had many good contributions to the New World, he also brought bad ones as well. In my opinion, Columbus did many more things to be seen as a villain rather and a hero. Columbus’s contributions to America are often mis viewed and a few great things he did cover up many horrible occurrences he was responsible for.…

Columbus had found the new world in an attempt to find Asia and had sent many expeditions to explore the area heroically. That is what the majority of people think about when they think of Christopher Columbus. Little do they know, Christopher Columbus had a dark side. Many people argue whether Columbus is a hero or a villain. For many people including me, Christopher Columbus is more of a villain than a hero. Christopher Columbus left Europe in voyage to find India. Christophe Columbus was a lost navigator, he believed he had reached India but he actually reached the Bahamas which is at Central America. Upon arrival to the shore, Christopher Columbus encountered the natives. When the natives showed hospitality to the Europeans, Columbus realized that the natives would do anything he wanted including surrendering their land. Christopher Columbus found out that there were gold in the land, he then took the natives as slaves, forcing them to work at a gold mines. A lot of native died in the mines or were killed by the Europeans. Christopher Columbus introduced Christianity to the natives, but none of the natives were converted because Christianity is against slavery. Columbus also introduced sex slavery, the native women were sold as sexual servants to the Europeans. Many women died of exhaustion and many committed suicide. Lastly Christopher Columbus introduced imperialism, he wanted the natives to pay taxes. As a result the native grew poor, many were dying due to poverty. Christopher Columbus is not a hero, he was a man who found Central America instead of India, he took advantage of the natives’ hospitality towards him, he introduced Christianity but it was in contrast to the Christian values and beliefs and he introduced imperialism which he was in control of power among the…

I believe Christopher Columbus was a hero in his time, and in ours. But before I can go any further I want to say that what was right and common sense in 1492 was different then in 2011. It is unfair to say he was a villain based on standards and morals that came 500 years later. Also, another thing we forget is the world was different back then. Europe was starting its Renaissance and each country was trying to top the other in development to become the most powerful country. So, there was a lot of competition going on. Besides, the planet was not very well known. The people of the time only knew of Asia, Africa, and Europe. They did not even know the continents they were aware of very well. They were mistaken in many of their beliefs about the world that they did know. They had seriously underestimated the size of Asia, therefore thinking the world was 2/3s smaller than it really was. However, it was a time of great exploration. People were starting to map out the world, partly for trade routes. With those mistaken beliefs: the need to explore, and the Renaissance, you can see what drove Columbus across the ocean blue. I think he is hero for many reasons: he discovered two “new” contents and took the risk of crossing the Atlantic into unknown waters and defying what people said was impossible. Also he was being heroic to Spain by finding gold and killing non-Christians.…

It is quite clear that Columbus is a controversial figure in American history; many different views of the “Admiral of the Ocean” are presented to the American public. For starters Columbus Day is still viewed as a national holiday; on the other side many people are strongly rooted against celebrating the landing of Columbus on the Americas. Some people argue that there is no point to the holiday because Columbus did not even land in North America; others say that he is a crucial part of American History, and of course some say he did more harm than good. Academics have many varying views on the explorer as well; for example Zinn and Morrison, both men wrote on almost exactly the same topic and the end results were two completely different views. Both Zinn and Morrison’s views on Columbus are much more different than similar resulting in two very different articles.…

My body hangs over the edge, swaying with nervousness. One step, I look down, I can’t see the bottom. Two steps, my legs shake like when they came. One the edge now, the wind seems to push me, it’s cold, oh so cold. It whispers and sings in long ways; groaning and howling. For this may be giving up, my retaliation rises, but the winner is clear. They the killers, the ones that named you savages. They have spilled out our blood for us to become one with nature. They chained us to become properties and they have come in a mass wave to take the land we once praised. With one graceful motion I,m falling, my heartbeat rises louder. And louder and louder, the thing almost beats out of my chest. I see the ground, my breath dives my throat, then nothing. Imagine that. You feel so lost and terrified you take your own life with the swiftest motion, letting your existence become one with absence. Now imagine your killer, the one that drove you to do it is a praised hero with a day to his name and equal grounds with Martin Luther King Jr. it's already happened, Christopher Columbus, the praised hero.…

Christopher Columbus can in no way, shape, or form be considered a hero. A hero is someone who performs good deeds for the sake of others and not for their own benefit. Christopher Columbus did not do a single good deed in any of his four voyages in the late 1400 's. Christopher Columbus was not the founder of the Americas we live in today because he did not set a single foot on these grounds, even if he did there were already the natives who inhabited the land. When he first sited land it was further down south in the Caribbean Islands. Christopher Columbus can be considered the enforcer of slavery. Slavery was already going on when he left Spain. However, the natives could be used for trade with other goods, this was known as the slave trade. He and his crew basically enslaved a whole race of men, women, and children. When Christopher Columbus discovered what he thought to be the "New World", he had no idea that he would find a whole race of people. His intensions were to go out and find gold and spices to bring back to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in Spain.…

For many years, there has been a controversy depicting whether Christopher Columbus was to be named a Hero or a Villain. As we all know, Christopher Columbus did not actually “discover” the Americas. People to this day believe that Christopher Columbus took claim to discovering what they called “The New World,” when in reality, Indians could have been living on America for hundreds to thousands of years before Columbus’s time. People can classify Columbus in many different forms; a hero, a villain, or even a leader to the people around him in his time. Due to the support of the documents presented and other historical evidence, I see Columbus more as a villain, for the way the natives were treated and how Columbus Day came to be. Columbus is called a hero because of the several accomplishes made during his life time, a villain due to the fact that several thousands of Indians and Native Americans perished during his exploration, and a leader to his fellow men because of the way he carried his men during the struggles in the Americas.…
