\The purpose of this memo is to address how impressive McDonald’s sustainability strategy, initiatives, and related outcomes are. From humble beginnings in 1954, McDonald’s is one of the world’s leading food service retailers. Their history shows they have embarked their journey towards a more sustainable business for more than three decades, starting in 1980 by disclosing nutrition information in their restaurants. Now, McDonald’s is “on a journey together for good; good food and sourcing served by good people while being a good neighbor both bettering the planet and giving back to the communities they serve.” We live in a finite world, and as the world becomes more aware of our limited resources, it is expected that businesses become more transparent about what they are doing to be socially responsible and sustainable. McDonald’s initiatives and goals have proved that they have a long-term commitment to do the right thing. Their efforts and goals demonstrate their commitment to their core values, their culture, society, and future generations. According to sustainability report, sustainable sourcing allows McDonald’s to create value for not only their business but the society as well. They are committed to protecting ecosystems, promoting resource efficiency, and supporting economic, and sustainable farming, fishing and responsible land management so that access to resources is not tarnished for future generations. McDonald’s focuses on five key areas: food, sourcing, planet, people, and community. They have focused on proving balanced menu choices doing things like reducing sodium in their food. Their goal is to create a business where their food is completely sustainable and 100% of their packaging be made from recycled material. They strive to operate environmentally efficient restaurants to reduce their carbon footprint. They are striving to have a 20% increase in energy efficiency in their restaurants around the world.
