The +Bloody Truths

I. Purpose/Problem
The objective of the lab was to see how each blood type reacted when transfused with a donor blood type. II. Background
There are many blood cells in your body and in order to help your body to tell which blood cells are bad or good, your blood cells have antigens which are surface proteins on the blood cells. Antigens determines whether your blood type is A, B, AB, or O. The antigen gives each blood cell an identity. If an antigen is foreign in the body, your body will make antibodies which fight the foreign antigens. For example, if you have A antigens, any blood cell with an antigen other than A is seen as foreign and your body will begin to make antibodies to fight the it. The exception to this is type O blood; it has no surface protein so when it is being transfused with another blood type, the body doesn’t see it as foreign. When transfusing blood, the donor is the blood that is being donated and mixed with the other blood type. The recipient is the blood that is receiving the other blood type in a transfusion. III. Hypothesis
I think that AB will not change throughout the experiment and that you will be able to donate any blood type to AB because it has both A and B antigens so any blood type will work for it. IV. Materials & Methods
Materials- 20 cups Water Food Dye To being the experiment, you need at least 20 cups halfway filled with water and grouped in five groups of four. Place a drop of blue dye in the first cup of each group, red dye in the second cup in each group, and purple dye by mixing red and blue dye together in the third cup in each group. Leave the fourth cup of each group clear with just water. Label each cup of red dye blood type A, each cup of blue dye blood type B, each cup of purple dye blood type AB, and each cup of just clear water blood type O.     The first step was to prepare the two filter paper for the experiment so you can measure the different columns at the end of the experiment. For that to happen you have to draw a horizontal line with a pencil. The line has to be 1cm above the bottom. After that you draw nine cross lines along the horizontal line with a space between each cross line of 1.5cm. Now you have to mark each area with a shortcut of the substance you are going to put on the horizontal line. The next step is to prepare each of your substances in the 24-well plate. Once you put all the substances in the well plate and dissolved the color from the M&Ms and Kool Aid with some drops of water, you dip a clean toothpick in the dye. You mark carefully a little point on the horizontal in the center of the section you marked with the substance and make sure the point is not too big because otherwise the experiment won’t work as good. The filter paper needs to dry for a few minutes before you form both to a cylinder and staple it so it stays a cylinder. Before you can keep going with the experiment you have to take a 50ml plastic beaker and fill that one with 50ml distilled water, solve a pinch salt in the water and stir until you can’t see crystals anymore. Pour a little bit of that solution in a petri dish but make sure it will be below the horizontal line you draw on the filter paper. Set…
