Social Cognitive Analysis
During this period of learning I came to better understand my learning in relation to the social cognitive theory of learning. From this, I started to piece together how I learn best. I have realised ways that I can apply this new understanding to my future learning.
While learning sign language I found that how I learn relates to the social cognitive learning theory. One aspect of this theory that matches up with my learning is the idea of learning by observation and modelling. I found that I learn best when I could observe others and see them modelling what to do. Learning sign language effectively, involves being able to understand images of signs and then copying them accurately. I found that I struggled with many of the images, particularly

This is relative to my learning as with the learning of some signs that weren’t immediately useful to me or within what I wanted to learn to begin with, I observed but did not copy. However, I learnt from my observation as I can visualise these signs and would be able to describe them or perform them later (Ormrod, 2016). Ormrod, 2016, states that people are often able to verbally describe a behaviour that they have observed but not yet imitated. Therefore, “they’ve learned something even though their behaviour hasn’t changed.” (Bandura, 1965a cited by Ormrod, 2016). Another example of this aspect of the social cognitive theory of learning that I noticed within my own learning was when I was learning the numbers. I observed and imitated the numbers up to about 25, I then noticed that numbers like 25 or 30 were just the first number followed by the second. So, while I observed videos which modelled numbers past 25, I did not imitate them and this knowledge will only be put into practice when it is necessary. This means that I learnt something new without a change in behaviour, as the idea I formed about how numbers are signed could later be acted upon later. In other words, “most human behavior is learned observationally through modeling: from observing others one forms an idea of how new behaviors …show more content…
Because I know that I can actively engage with learning more easily when I anticipate a reward of some sort, I will also be able to focus more on learning areas where I need to make more of an effort to be engaged. In regard to specifically learning how to do something new, I will be able to learn more effectively as I understand what I need to do to actively engage. This means I will seek out people who are experienced so that I can observe them or I can look for models in tutorial videos as
