Personal Narrative-Upward Bound Program
I was so focused on the academic aspects of school my freshman and sophomore years’ that i wasn’t active in any of my school’s clubs or activities. I finally decided to get more involved my junior year and I joined nearly every club, participated in every activity, and even went to as many sports events as I could have. I currently am a six year member of the National Beta Club and have held the positions of Vice President of Fundraising and Senior Representative throughout my high school career. Not only am I a leader in the Beta Club, but I participate in the Trailblazer leadership program with the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance and my school’s freshman mentor program. I also joined the TRIO Upward Bound program whose ACT prep helped me to obtain a 22 as my highest ACT score at the time allowing me acceptance into my school’s ACT top 20 Club. Although it was hard with my many extracurricular activities I somehow still managed to finish my junior year with a 3.8 …show more content…
This is my second year on the Peabody Magnet High Soccer team, and I was even awarded the Coach’s award for playing midfield and made honorably mention in my district ranking. I also am the Co-Captain of the Peabody Flag line. Being on the soccer and flag teams taught me that hard work really pays off and really forced me to challenge myself. When the flag line first started, we did not have a coach or experience. Although we taught ourselves our own routines, techniques and twirls; we placed and won a 3rd place trophy in our first battle of the bands competition. It was the smallest trophy there, but it meant more to me than any big one could. It just proved to me again that if I put my mind to something I could accomplish

Recently I was voted MIA ambassador of Peabody Veterans Memorial High School along with Ben Manoogian. We went for an interview at PAT and got interviewed the superintendent. We spoke about the new turf field, how to be a good effective leader, and about our soccer seasons thus far. After the interview Mr. Buckley drove us back to the school, and he was speaking to us about the great opportunities we have at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School. Although I hear those words often I never really listen. Mr. Buckely said, “Ben and Katrina you guys are great leaders and great soccer players, but remember you will not always be playing soccer. After college soccer will probably end for you. So take advantage of your education. You are a student before you are an athlete.” He went on to tell us his experiences, and how him dedicating himself to his schoolwork put him in the successful position he is in today.…

Hello, my name is Shane Richardson. In Stranahan High School, I am a jack of all trades. I am currently the only sophomore taking Mr. Hale’s AP Calculus class, I have co founded the science club, and I play tennis outside of school. I think I would be an asset to the Honor Society because I am really organized. I know if you ever see my books in the hallway they are kind of a mess with papers but I know how to set up conferences, make lists, and organize events. I also never give up. In anything I do, I believe that if you start something you should see it through. One example of this is my calculus class. I started out the year not knowing anything about calculus. I didn’t even know what calculus (The study of change) was. I was really nervous about having my first AP math class and I was stressed out about the first quiz. I realized later that if I prepare well and I work my hardest I can succeed in anything.…

From a young age we’re asked what we want to be when we grow up, never how we expect to become when we grow up. I was well aware of what I wanted to become, but not sure how to get there until I started high school when my counselor explained to me the importance of having a full portfolio with a wide range of extracurricular activities. Then it became clear to me, I needed extracurricular activities to become who I wished to be. Throughout my high school career I’ve participated in several extracurricular actives such as math club, soccer and UIL One Act. In the future, I want to participate in these activities or anything similar to those I participated in high school.…

I am able to help my peers by suggesting ways to improve on themselves by studying with me before a test or working together on homework problems. In addition to scholarship and leadership, I am very active in service activities outside of school. At my mother’s house, we volunteer for a dog organization and foster pit-bulls who are injured and in need of nurturing. I also go with the Williamstown Jazz Band to perform at elderly homes in order to cheer up the residents. Furthermore, I will gladly partake in school sponsored activities without delay. Because of my participation in extracurricular activities, my character has grown immensely over the past year. I have adapted to easily take critique and apply…

Almost immediately after receiving my final grades i decided to drop my AP classes. I also was extremely discouraged to join any clubs since i felt that disappointed in myself for not being able to get decent grades. However , with time i learned that what i was able to accomplish was actually amazing; I extremely challenged myself to-do something that was way out of my comfort zone. I acquired skills that I know will be extremely helpful to me in college. All by myself I was able to learn, how to learn the material on my own. I was able to demonstrate to myself that I do have the capability to come up with different possible solutions to obstacles that I face. I also learned that through perseverance and determination, I am able to still accomplish, at least a part of, my goals even in the toughest of…

Throughout my high school career, I did not show academic excellence from freshman year until the beginning of junior year. When junior year came by, I decided to show my academic potential by signing myself up for Post Secondary Enrollment Option at Concordia University. Following this commitment towards Concordia, it helped bring out my academic abilities by trying harder in school now so that I could get accepted into the PSEO program, which would help pay for parts of my tuition for college. Gradually, I started to show more interest for my academics-- which taught me to become a leader not only to myself, but also to my family and peers. My commitment towards leadership and service to be a more positive difference-maker was brought up…

I fully understand that my extracurricular activities appear to be at the absolute minimal. However, I would like to contend that this is the direct result of participating in dual enrollment while in high school. Through the High School Enrichment Program offered by State Center Community College District (SCCCD), I am endowed with the privilege to not only enroll in college courses, but also receive college credit at the same time. This is a highly rigorous program that only a limited number of students who have approval from their high school principal, guidance counselor, and parents are eligible.…

Ever since my freshman year of high school, I’ve wanted to be a member of the National Honors Society. Being a part of the National Honors Society meant that I would have done well in both my studies and contributing time in my community. In order to reach my goal, I took multiple honors and AP classes to enhance my knowledge. These classes were indeed rigorous and there were many occurrences where I stayed up late doing homework or studying. During these times I felt like giving up, but the passion I had for conquering my goal burnt too brightly. The hard work I’ve placed on my studies has certainly paid off because now I’m at the top 5% in my class with a 3.8 GPA. Also throughout I’ve helped my community in multiple ways such as volunteering…

While in high school I became extremely interested in one club in particular. DECA, an association of marketing students, became my second life while in high school. I did not find out about it until my junior year but as soon as I did I excelled tremendously in it. I was the president of DECA for my school and then I went on to be elected District President over our school district. The competitions were so much fun and kept me busy and out of trouble. I learned how to speak in front of large crowds, which is one of my biggest fears, and also how to be in a position of leadership and actually lead in the…

In college, I was involved in few outside activities. I did pledge a sorority and even served as its president, but only after several of my sisters convinced me I’d be great at it. After a handful of jobs that paid the bills right out of college, I finally went to work for a large investment firm. There I continued the trend of just meeting my potential, only taking on new challenges when someone brought it to my attention that I’d be perfect for the opportunity.…

Since I began attending ___________ High School in September of 2003 I strived harder than ever for academic success and pledged to give back to my school and community in any way possible. After being in _______ for just a few weeks, it was evident that joining extracurricular activities and participating in community service was a major part of getting where you want to go. The National Honor Society surfaced around January of 2004 and I knew somehow, someway I was going to into that prestigious organization that was reserved for the best and brightest students. The National Honor Society was my main motivation to work harder and to give back to my community and have that as a little incentive. The year progressed and came to a close. My grades were boarder line between a B+ and an A. I was aware that your grade point average has to be an eighty-nine or greater. It did not seem too hard and so I set out to work toward my goal. During that summer I made a personal commitment to volunteer around the school, and I did.…
