Personal Narrative: Transition From Childhood To Adulthood
In my family we have a tradition of holding a rites of passage for the 13th birthday of any sibling in my family girl or boy. The purpose of the rites of passage is to mark the transition from childhood to adulthood, it also symbolizes for my family being dead to childish things and alive in more adult hood. For boys its learning how to become a True man, for girls its learning how to become a true women. A true man or woman and not what the society calls a "man" or "woman." Four years ago it was my turn to make the transition from childhood to adulthood, but as a 13-year-old boy I didn't have the slightest idea about how to become a man. But what's the best way to learn? From people who have been through it. So I along with my parents …show more content…
The sun was just beginning to set and my uncle was just finishing up cooking barbecue chicken and steak, with some fresh green vegetables. The stories the ten men shared with me all stuck and I shall remember them forever hopefully, for them to take the time out of there busy schedule having a job, wife, and kids. I truly was touched by there willingness and even more stirred by the specific life stories each one shared.
A few in particular I remember more vividly because of the impact surrounding the story. My uncle Steven Johnson talked with me about being respectful towards women no matter what. He named countless things from opening the door for them to treating them with absolute respect, treat them you would your own mother are his exact words. My uncle had been married to his wife for 34 years and he shared with me all the things that had to happen for the relationship to last and all the things that happen in a marriage. Afterward my older cousin Nick talked to me about time management, and how significant it will be when I grow older and eventually go to college and then out into the “real word” as he put

In the mid-nineteenth century a girl named Ni-bo-wi-se-gwe (Oona) was born in pitch darkness in the middle of the day when the sun and moon crossed paths. The book Night Flying Woman by Ignatia Broker is biography of Broker’s great-great-grandmother, Oona. It describes Oona’s life through what Broker has learned from her grandparents when they passed down the stories. In the book, one of the main themes is passing traditions on. I chose this theme because in the book, passing traditions on is major part of the characters’ culture. Passing traditions on is a practice that is important to many cultures and it effectively connects generations of people through experiences and stories.…

While the assignment seemed like the biggest catastrophe of my fourth grade career at the time, I would not trade the hours spent listening to my grandfather’s stories for anything in the world. Those few hours alone taught me more about hard work and determination than any class at school ever could. I try every day to remind myself of the sacrifices he made for me to be here and have the opportunity to get an education and pursue my passions.…

My metamorphosis came about when I entered high school. My English teacher assigned a project in which we began mapping out our high school experiences so that they attract the attention of our desired colleges. After class, I opened up to her about how I did not have any direction in life. I had no clue what I wished to be or even why I was going to school. To my surprise, she didn’t ridicule me. She simply asked me to recall a time that inspired me when I was a child. It could be anything from a superhero movie to the first time I learned about the planetary system. Out of habit, I claimed that I was never inspired by anything. She then retorted that if that were the truth, why was I still being driven to exist. Without purpose, creatures lose the will to carry on so something had to have incited my passion to keep me active for all these years. To this day I am amazed by how a simple phrase could move…

Christianity has always been apart of my life. My grandparents, parents and siblings are strong christians and always encouraged me to become one. When I was about four I was at a Christian camp that my family had always gone to and I decided then that I would give my life to Christ. But honestly at four years old I had only given my life to Christ because that's what everyone else did. Through my early teenage years I had lost my connection with Christ. There were so many difficult situations I was going through that Christ seemed so distant from me and what I needed. But turns out what I really needed was Christ. At the beginning of my sophomore year I began to go to Young Life, and what a difference Young Life made on my life. Young Life…

In 1997, when I was 34 years old, my mother passed away due to Multiple Sclerosis. She was blind and paralyzed for years before she passed away. She was truly an inspiration to me and other people. Her faith was strong and she lifted everyone up due to her positive attitude and faith. "Life span developmental theory defines development as a process of adapting to the constant flux of influences in our lives" (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015, p. 481). During the middle adulthood part of my life, I continued to adapt through growth, maintenance, and regulation of loss (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). Most children develop pretty similarly. They are born, they learn to crawl then walk and then run. My life didn’t start that way. I was born in February of 1994 in Redwood City, California to two loving parents. My parents were in their late twenties when they had me and were anxious to start a family. They had been married for seven years by the time I was born so I was brought into a very stable environment. Although my mother had taken good care of herself throughout her pregnancy, my health upon birth was not what they expected it to be. My mother recalls seeing me for the first and asking the nurse what was on my back. It was soon realized that I had a closed meingocele on the lower section of my back meaning that I had Spina Bifida.…

An event that marked my transition from childhood to adulthood would be the day I moved to the United States From Dominican Republic four years ago. I was fourteen years old when my family and I decided to change our lives. My mother always wanted a better future for our family., therefore she decided this would be the best for all of us. At first it was indubitable difficult for me to become accustomed to a new country, leaving the rest of my family behind. It was a challenge, but I am proud to say that even if I had atrocious days where people criticized me by reason…

I’ve played plenty of childhood games growing up as a kid. Every weekend I would go to my cousin’s house for fun times. During the night, every kid in the park, Oak Dale Park, would meet up by the pond that was located in the middle of the park. Me and my friends would team up and play tag or hide and seek. My friends didn’t like to play that game with me because I was always victorious. I also use to play basketball outside with my dad which eventually lead to problems because I don’t like to lose, but I enjoyed playing. Competition games were always my favorite because I was very competitive which my dad say I got from…

Often times, I see kids playing as grown ups, always hearing them wishing they’re older and wanting time to pass by so quickly. And all I want to do is beg them not to rush, to take time for themselves to flourish because they’re delicate flowers that need time to bloom to handle their future’s harshness -things I never did as a kid. Not surprisingly, I was exactly similar; the only thing I considered “cool” as a kid is to grow up. To grow up, everything was possible. To grow up, I would be living my dream. Unfortunately, my little, naïve self did not know any better.…

Where they held a reception for me and I thanked god for making me the young women that I was. Then we took more pictures with family and friends, and walked across the city announcing the event with loud music following.
