Personal Essay: High School Career
From a young age we’re asked what we want to be when we grow up, never how we expect to become when we grow up. I was well aware of what I wanted to become, but not sure how to get there until I started high school when my counselor explained to me the importance of having a full portfolio with a wide range of extracurricular activities. Then it became clear to me, I needed extracurricular activities to become who I wished to be. Throughout my high school career I’ve participated in several extracurricular actives such as math club, soccer and UIL One Act. In the future, I want to participate in these activities or anything similar to those I participated in high school.

Education has always been one of the most important things to me, and I am dedicated to learn as much as humanly possible. Throughout my high school career I have challenged myself by completing six advanced placement classes and taking other honors classes. I have taken these classes as a way to help guide myself for what is to come in the future in college. I was inducted into the National Honors Society during my junior year of high school, and I graduated with honors. Both of these successes are the two greatest accomplishments of my high school career. These two achievements prove how dedicated I was, and still am, to getting the best education I could. My quality of dedication will stick with me throughout my future endeavors.…

Being a member in National Honor Society implies that you are a person of great character. One of the most important qualities that you can possess is leadership. Honesty is one of the key factors to being a good leader. You must be honest towards everyone, and in everything that you do. If a leader wasn't honest, then no one would trust them. And if they weren't trustworthy then who would want to follow their lead? Leadership also requires that you have an optimistic attitude about everything. You have to take control, and look for the best in every situation. No one wants to follow someone who is always in a bad mood, and always looks for something to complain about.…

“The hardest obstacle to overcome in any leadership position is getting past the apathy to get people involved in the process to get things done…The greatest enemy to accomplishment is apathy” (Burke). National Honor Society upholds its members to have 4 important values. These being scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Leadership, in my opinion, is a very important aspect in National Honors Society because you are expected to be a role model by positively inspiring people around you. This quote stuck out because it says that inspiring people is a way to overcome obstacles in leadership. If you inspire people and make them get rid of their apathy, you can overcome stalling in the process and reach accomplishment.…

Throughout the past two years at Staten Island Academy, this learning environment has given me many opportunities that I could not have gotten at any other school. I'm not the most athletic, but I do very much enjoy playing sports. Here at the Academy middle school, I was able to experience any sport that I wanted to play, without a tryout system. The music and theater program here has given me countless opportunities to better my skills as an actor and a baritonist. I have been able to act in two plays, "Schoolhouse Rock Live, Jr." and "Cyrano deBurgershack." They helped me learn the ins and outs of acting, as I was a beginner before I came to the Academy. In the orchestra, I have appeared in 5 concerts, all of which have been immensely successful thanks to our conductor, Ms. Wheatley. There have also been many truly amazing teachers that have guided me to academic success. Specifically, Mr. Levine helps me to understand…

I was so focused on the academic aspects of school my freshman and sophomore years’ that i wasn’t active in any of my school’s clubs or activities. I finally decided to get more involved my junior year and I joined nearly every club, participated in every activity, and even went to as many sports events as I could have. I currently am a six year member of the National Beta Club and have held the positions of Vice President of Fundraising and Senior Representative throughout my high school career. Not only am I a leader in the Beta Club, but I participate in the Trailblazer leadership program with the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance and my school’s freshman mentor program. I also joined the TRIO Upward Bound program whose ACT prep helped me to obtain a 22 as my highest ACT score at the time allowing me acceptance into my school’s ACT top 20 Club. Although it was hard with my many extracurricular activities I somehow still managed to finish my junior year with a 3.8…

Since its establishment, the National Honor Society has been built upon the core values of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Throughout the years, National Honor Society has upheld these pillars, and its outstanding club members strive to embody these values in every aspect of their lives. However, these four principles add up to become something much more over the course of National Honor Society’s lifetime -- its legacy. These four honorable tenets are what constitutes a legacy, and I wish to become an individual who represents all of these core values -- and more. I genuinely believe that I exemplify most of the qualities that National Honor Society values, and though I am aware that I am still lacking in some, I will work…

Students everywhere are being picked for honor societies in their schools. When a student learns that they have been selected for such an honor, it encourages them to maintain their standing, or even find a higher ground. I, Matthew Hurley, was ecstatic to learn that I was considered for the honor society of Fairview Schools. I am now a third quarter sophomore and through my time so far in high school, I believe I have shown the qualities of a student in the Honor Society. I strongly adhere to the thought that I represent the four pillars of an Honor Society member. I have held my grades at a high percentage, helped my community and peers by doing service to them, lead those around me to become superior in their activities that I enjoy as…

One of the hardest experiences for me was having two shoulder surgeries in high school. Although it may not sound very traumatizing now, two surgeries meant that my cheerleading career of 14 years was over. When something that was such a big part of your life for so long is taken away in the blink of an eye, it feels like your whole world is crashing down! My senior year was exceptionally hard for me considering I was trying to make the perfect decision on my future college, my father was traveling 2 hours for work each week, and I was trying to recover from a right and left shoulder surgery. These surgeries prevented me from trying out of the cheer team as a fourth year member and it left me devastated. At the time, I was concerned about regaining…

Students are in school about seven hours a day. After school, many of these students participate in extra-curricular activities, such as sports, clubs, theater or volunteering. Although academic work is vital, these extra-curricular activities are also significant for students because they teach responsibility and teamwork. In fact, most colleges require a wide variety of activities for incoming freshman students. But these important activities are often squeezed out by time in school and with homework.…

As I started freshman year I didn’t really think about what would happen after high school. As I grew older and wiser I started realizing what I wanted for myself. The thought of attending college was just as mirror vision because I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life after high school for the longest time. Researching and gaining more knowledge of universities I came upon Texas Tech University and decided to take a tour. Little did I know that Texas Tech would open so many doors for me and would soon be my future home. Texas Tech is a prestigious university which will help me further my career goal of achieving a marketing degree in the near future.…

Four years ago, I began my high school career not fully knowing who I was or what I wanted to become. Now, as a senior, I have discovered so much about myself through the clubs and activities which I am affiliated with. One of the touching moments in my time as a volunteer was when the BETA club helped to landscape the nursing home’s garden. The staff members and residents were so proud that the youth had come to beautify the area for them. I really started to understand that people feel better when they work for the greater good. Another life changing experience was getting to work with the Pre-Kindergarten students at Benton Elementary. At this point in my education, I had already been a member of the Future Teachers of America (FTA) club at my school for three years, but I still had my doubts about becoming a teacher.…

Ever since I can remember I have been fascinated with acting. I loved being on stage, developing my own character, and working hard learning hundreds upon hundreds of lines. Once I had the opportunity to use my skills in high school I jumped on the chance to do it. I auditioned and rehearsed five days a week from 3pm to 7pm, all while juggling AP classes and keeping my grades up to honors. It may have been hard, and still is but I do it because I adore it and in the end all the hours I spent on it is worth it. After I am done with all of my shows I always become very sick, because in the weeks before the opening night I put all of my energy into the shows that I begin to compromise my own health.…
