Dialogue on How to Improve Your English
Shahira: Oh my goodness, I only managed to get 40 marks in my English test. How can I improve my English? It’s very difficult, especially those tenses that make me very confused.
Syafiqah : I agree with you. I also got low marks in my English test. Please help us, Fang Qing and Ravitra.
Fang Qing : Actually, learning English is not as difficult as you think. Don’t be disappointed. I’ll help you since you need my assistance right now. You’ve got to commit yourself if you want to be successful. If you’re lazy or not interested in learning English, you’ll never break through yourself. As the saying goes where there’s a will, there’s a way.
Shahira : I really want to be able to read, write and speak well in English. It’ll be useful when I would like to get a good job or go overseas to carry on my studies or work.
Syafiqah : Me too! English is quite important as the international language nowadays.
Ravitra : Okay. First of all, you must read more English materials, such as magazines and newspapers. You can also read the storybooks that are available in our school library. If you are financially sound, you can buy some English books to read. Then, you’ve got to speak more often. Don’t be shy to speak English. Making mistakes is normal. Please bear in mind that practice makes perfect.
Shahira : I think my main problem lies in English grammar. To me, learning grammar is very tough and complicated.
Syafiqah : I’ve tried to learn grammar before, but I got more confused after learning.
Fang Qing : I know. Learning grammar is not as easy as ABC. However, if you speak more and read more English books, you’ll also improve your grammar. Of course, you’ve got to buy a good grammar book that is useful to you.
Ravitra : Grammar is very important. Without the knowledge of grammar, you aren’t able to speak English fluently.
Syafiqah :

'One of the most misunderstood words in the English language has to be the word ‘grammar’ '(Rendall, 2006: 53). This statement stands as the ideal starting point from which to unveil a rationale for the importance of grammar in the language acquisition process and how it has been perceived in the past decades . Nowadays with an increasing numbers of international students, majority of them suffer from the problem about writing an academic essay in English, more and more people study about it. Some scholars note that international students usually have problems to write essays in a new language because of the lack of grammar and vocabulary. Holopainen(1997,p.119 cited in Harris, 2010) claimed that “grammar and lexical inappropriateness” is an important reason in international students who often failed in writing. What’s more, Harris’s(2010,P.67) research between domestic and non-native students had found that English native speakers rarely make mistakes in grammar, but to overseas students, the moment of reversing different form order and even missing subjects together is fairly easy to be seen.…
