It wasn’t until 1944, when Hass was replaced by SS- Hauptsturmfűhrer Josef Kramer that Bergen-Belsen became what its is known as today. While working at Bergen-Belsen, Kramer, who had been working in concentration camps since 1934, had gained a well known nickname. Kramer was nicknamed “The Beast” hence the fact that thousands of prisoners had died while in his command. The Bergen-Belsen concentration camp had three satellite camps. The name of these satellite camps were the Außenlager Bomlitz-Benefeld, the Außenlager Hambühren-Ovelgönne,and the Außenlager Unterlüß-Altensothrieth . Before the death march, thousands of people were killed in the camps and also during the death march itself. The death marching consisted of a 30 mile walk to Gleiwitz and 35 miles to Wodzislaw which was in the western part of Upper Silesia. The SS guards shot anyone who fell and could no longer walk. Because of harsh weather conditions, the prisoners died from the severe cold, hunger, and exposure. Close to 15,000 people died during the evacuation marches from Auschwitz camps and their sub camps. There were hundreds, if not thousands of death camps settled across Europe during World War II. But despite the word “death camps”, a term that is used to describe the horrible events of the Holocaust, the historic mass killing of around six million Jews or more. These were more of working camps, but still, out of all of those, only six of them were used specifically for actually working the Jews to death. Belzec, Chelmno, Majdanek, Sobibor, as well as Treblinka were quite large, but none of those five are as large or as infamous as the Auschwitz death camp. Through the beginning of the 1941 to around 1945, the camp has gone from 835 square feet of absolute horror to true historical suffering and terror that won’t, and shouldn’t, be forgotten.…

Millions of Jewish civilians died in concentration camps due to the cruelty of the Nazi party (Rodriguez). “Jews were subject to beatings and harassment like the cutting of their beards” (Rodriguez). They were given meager rations of watery soup and bread, but it never put a stop to their starvation. According to Rodriguez, men often had no sleeping quarters, were not able to shower, and were almost never fed their tiny rations of food. Because of the lack of sanitation and food, diseases such as typhus spread throughout the camps. Furthermore, they were expected to work extremely physically demanding jobs despite their lack of nourishment and health. In fact, their mistreatment and work was specifically designed to weaken them until they died. Finally, the Jewish people were kept in a constant state of terror never knowing if they would live to see the next day…

It is difficult to talk about the Holocaust in Poland without speaking of this camp in some further detail. Many people refer to all Nazi camps as concentration camps, but in reality, there were several types of camps, such as: concentration camps, extermination camps, labor camps, prisoner of war camps etc. Auschwitz is actually a series of three separate camps, the first built as a detention center for political prisoners. The camp “evolved into a network of camps where Jewish people and other perceived enemies of the Nazi state were exterminated, often in gas chambers, or used as slave labor.” Upon arriving at the camp, the prisoners were examined by Nazi doctors. If a person was judged to be unfit for work, including children, elderly and the sick, they were taken directly to the showers and told they needed to be disinfected from lice, but in reality they were sent to be killed in the gas…

If an individual were to be immediately sent to death, they were directly sent to Birkenau. The official goal of Buchenwald was the destruction of the prisoners by work. Of the 43,045 prisoners who died, thousands were murdered just through work, beatings, torture, or starvation and lack of hygiene. During the construction of “Blood Street” (the road leading from the Ettersberg to the entry of the camp) alone resulted in thousands of deaths. During the summer, the SS ordered prisoners to carry huge stones from the quarry to the camp, and those who carried stones that were “too small” were immediately killed. Prisoners were also chained to four-wheel carts and had to pull heavy loads to the camp while the SS forced them to sing. These prisoners were referred to as the “Singing Horses”. Many prisoners were treated cruelly after death…
