Environment
There has been a gradual change in the mode of packaging for last years. For instance, earlier fruits and vegetables were used to be transported in wooden boxes but today cardboard crates are used .This is mainly to reduce the cost. Obviously,a cardboard crate would cost less than wooden crate. Moreover, using cardboard crates is more eco friendly than cutting trees and making wooden boxes and supporting an environmental cause helps firms improve their goodwill and eventually their sales. Similarly, selling of milk, first in glass bottles, then in packets ,then tetra packs and vending machines is all to reduce costs or improve their goodwill by innovating the mode of packaging. Tetra pack keeps the milk safe for months and is made of paper and can be recycled. Plastic packets incur lesser costs and vending machines in itself have no packaging cost.
So,companies use new and unique mode of packaging to ,one, reduce their costs, two,to promote the product.

Deterioration * After wooden pallets are used several times, the wood begins to wear. It splinters, cracks and even breaks under the pressure of continued use. The deterioration is natural and occurs eventually, even if the wood is treated to repel moisture and to strengthen it. This disadvantage leads to replacement much sooner than with plastic pallets. The insects burrow into the wood, eating away at it and thus weakening what should be a support structure.. Cleanliness

* In addition to germs, wooden pallets are collectors of dirt and debris. Cleaning them becomes more and more difficult over time as the pallets age. They must be heat-treated to get rid of the contamination and washed to be rid of dirt and debris. However, the heat accelerates deterioration, and

For many, the answer to cleaning pallets is to fumigate the pallets with methyl bromide, a pesticide that has restricted use due to its toxic nature, or they may choose to heat-treat each pallet. Methyl bromide is not only an environmental toxin, but is also a known neurotoxin and carcinogen causing symptoms such as fatigue and acute memory loss. Heat treated pallets are of course free from methyl bromide and its’ less than desirable side effects but exposure to outside elements will more easily allow them to be contaminated again. New government standards include labeling pallets for methyl bromide, shown as MB on pallets, or HT for heat treated ones. This will help you choose a pallet that is safe for both you and the environment.…

If you ever happen to go to a Sam’s Club or Costco you will see that many of their products are on pallets. Companies use this tertiary type of packaging for their bulk shipments. Many times you will see boxes loaded onto pallets and then shrink wrapped into place to ensure that the material does not fall off the pallet during shipping. Pallets also come in several sizes with the most common size being 40in. by 48 in. (Blanchard, 2004) There are several different methods in which boxes can be stacked onto pallets. One of the most common methods of stacking pallets is the brick method. This method is believed to be the strongest method because the weaker part of the box supports the greatest weight. (David, Stewart, 2010) There are several considerations that must be considered before deciding on using a pallet. A company must decide on if it will use secondary packaging to ship the product or if tertiary packaging will be used. If tertiary packaging will be used knowing what size boxes will be used because will determine the pallet size. Also, how is the product going to be shipped? Pallets used for air transportation will be different than pallets that are used for ground transportation. Other considerations will be how the boxes will be secured onto the pallet and if the material will need to protected against the weather elements. The use of pallets allow for easier movement of material and products from warehouse to warehouse or onto a particular mode of transportation.
