Lower vascular plants include divisions Lycophyta, Sphenophyta, and Pterophyta. Division Lycophyta includes club mosses and ground pines. Sporophytes of these have stems covered with small, scaly leaves. Sporangia appear on the upper surface of the leaves and are structures that produce spores. Lycopods have small leaves that each contains one vein that brings water to the leaf from the roots and carries away extra food. Division Sphenophyta is made up of horsetails or scouring rushes. Similar to the lycopods, horsetails have an underground rhizome that produces tiny roots and stems. A small ring of leaves grows around the stem at each joint. Another similarity to Lycopods is their environment, carboniferous forests. Division Pterophyta is ferns. Ferns have large, multiple-veined leaves. Leaves of ferns are called fronds and generally arise from a rhizome. Ferns can range many heights depending on their environment. Tropical ferns can grow very high while ferns in temperate areas can be rather small. Sporangium is generally found on the underside of fern leaves. Cells in the sporangia undergo meiosis and form haploid spores that are released into the air.…

The concept of the binomial system was introduced by Carolus Linnalus (1707-1778) in 1753 for flowering plants. The system gives each plant a name which is made up of two parts. The first part is called the generic name (or genus) and always starts with a capital. The second part is the specific name (or epithet) and always comes after the generic name. The specific name always starts with lower case, unless it is name after a person or place.…

The cycle of life for a plant starts off as a seed. The seed goes through mitosis and turns into a nature plant, which sometimes may produce flowers and fruits. Fruits are where the new seeds can be found, continuing the life cycle. A monocot seed with 2 genetic codes (2N) would grow by mitosis. The growth by mitosis would lead to the growth of the apical tips. The meristem cells (stem cells) keep dividing. Then the zone of elongation, the plant would get longer and grow. Eventually the cells would become specialized. The apical tips are at the top and bottom of the plant: causing it to grow roots and become taller. The plant eventually grows its roots, a stem, and 2 leaves.…

The flag leaf on mature plants is noticeable by its elevated, more horizontal stance. The fungus sporulates profusely on the stems of diseased plants near the water level, and after the water is drained, noticeable pink to white fungal growth appears at the base of the plants. This cottony growth produces masses of conidia which contaminate the outside of healthy seeds during harvest.…
