Michele Randall
My name is Michele. I am in my Early-forties, a mom to two boys in which is grown now. I have been a person who always struggle with my weight most of my life, about 6 or 7 years ago. I heard about these diet pills and friends telling me to try them they really work and I have try many diets so I decided to try them and they work, I lost 65 pound. “I was so excited” but, I was noticing over the years that I was gaining more and more weight. My close family and friends were always polite and the subject for the most part was avoided. Within myself I knew something had to change. I started changing my eating habit, cutting out fast food and fried food not eating meat every day and keeping my food portion small. So when I received a scholarship for the summer ll semester I jump on the opportunity to start my work routine with yoga, zumba and self-defense classes, But when I found out about the Zumba I knew I hit the jackpot.
The moment I took my first Zumba class, I was hooked! I went from the back row to the front row. At first, I was in J-lo modern dance class in which clash with my work schedule, but I am so glad this class was available and with the same teacher which is “awesome”. This been something I have been wanting to do for a long time. I feel great, I can ride my bike further distances, and my blood pressure is back to normal. lowered my cholesterol, and increased my stamina. Zumba is such a foreign sounding word that many women are afraid to even investigate it. When they do, they say they can’t dance or that they can’t keep up that kind of pace for an hour. I think those are just convenient excuses. It was ok to leave my kids and go exercise. It was ok to take the time for me. I was worth it. Because, I used to be a professional at avoiding the camera and still is a little to this day. I am not where I want to be yet!!! But, Working on it! Since I decided to take these classes has my body been changed, but my mind, life, and entire

Throughout the course of the last nine weeks, my eyes have been opened to an entirely new world full of nutritional and exercising information. It is rough being a thirty-three year old husband and father, with an eye on trying to remain on this planet for as long as humanly possible. As parents, we all have goals we want to achieve. The usual suspects include seeing your children graduate high school and then college, walking your daughter down the aisle of her wedding, and being able to retire and continue to live a healthy and happy life. What I have come to realize through this nutritional and exercising information is that in order to accomplish this goal, there are certain aspects of my life that I need to change. I am not a particularly healthy eater. I do not exercise regularly. I mostly do what I can with the time I have available. I suspect this problem plagues many men across this country and around the world. In my state, the obesity rate is close to 30% and it continues to trend upward (Centers for Disease Control, 2011). Without a drastic change in lifestyle, I am simply adding to the statistics. The knowledge I have gained in this course has led me to believe that this is simply unacceptable. Something has to change, and I have a plan to make that happen.…

As a group, sit down to brainstorm, discuss and decide upon a social or political issue that you want to explore through movement. Examples of social/political issues are: homelessness, oppression, environmental issues, corporate avarice, racism, domestic violence, racial profiling, but there are many, many issues that can be explored in addition to those mentioned above. You may wish to bring in source material (a photograph, a poem/song, a painting, news clip, a personal story, etc., related to the social/political issue. Using the source material as a starting point, independently create a phrase of movement for yourself that is 32 counts in length utilizing at least 8 of the movement elements listed below. In groups, using your individual phrases as a starting point, combine, manipulate and abstract your phrases, adding formal elements, to create a dance composition. The composition should be between 3-4 minutes long. You may set your dances to recorded music, a sound collage of your own creation or they may utilize text (pre-recorded or spoken in performance). Silence is also an option. Try to avoid music with lyrics that describe your issue. You should aim to explore and portray your topic through movement, sound and/or text. You may also incorporate props, or costumes if these seem crucial to the performance of your dance composition.…

As humans, losing weight and weight loss is a struggle many of us have encountered in life. We strive to achieve the body we have perceived as perfect and often times, including myself, have failed numerously at this goal. I have been there and done that, from Weight Watchers meals, to earnestly trying and going to the gym nearly every day, and even just skipping certain meals. To a certain extent all of these routines have worked for me, but not enough to keep going as I have stopped doing a lot of these activities; due to not keeping up with myself and every day eventually became a cheat day, where I would indulge in foods I know I shouldn’t have and not workout. As individuals, certain tasks and goals can become overbearing and can seem impossible to accomplish, but as a…

Last year I was prit near 375 lbs and I knew something had to give. I have tried, low fat, low cal, counting macros and everything. I always still would gain! I would eat veggies and lean meat keeping under 1200 calories sometimes 800 when frustrated, I'd still wake up weighing more. Well to be honest, I believe the food pyramid is very, very inaccurate. I'd have to sit on a chair to do dishes, I felt useless anymore honestly. One day something clicked and I seen a friend who posted about her 210 lb weight loss and started to read. I was blown away! I started it and I won't lie, I went out with a bang! Made a huge chocolate cake 13x9 and we ate half of it. I canned the rest. Within the first 3 days I was 5 lbs down! I couldn't believe it, without any exercise! People say oh you can't do that, but you can! You simply have to eat the RIGHT foods! 60% carbs isn't for us! That's what was set up by a group of people who think they know everything! They don't! But anyways if you want to learn how to eat the correct macros and learn to lose weight without worry, then this is for you! Ooh you have to give up some things! But tell yourself YOU'RE WORTH IT! I know what it feels like to hurt everyday and not be able to function and go out to the store cause you just cannot walk.…

I had been overweight since my early teens, as time passed it continued to worsen. at the age of 15 I was on the brink of obesity; I had to decide a change in my life. My life had consisted of school and video games; these combined had led me to an unhealthy lifestyle. I had dedicated years into my video game hobby, but this was the least active of my time. My hobby had to go, a new hobby had emerged: bodybuilding. Bodybuilding had given me a satisfaction that my previous hobby did not give, the satisfaction of working; that patience and efforts lead to greater satisfaction than momentary things like video…

However, we were able to overcome this hardship thanks to the generosity of others. Coming from a low-income background, my mother and I could only afford unhealthy foods. My eating pattern along with lack of exercise lead to me weighing over 280 pounds when I was in the 7th grade. Due to my obesity, I was often bullied by children in my school. In order to hide the pain, I was feeling, I would look towards food as a comfort. One day in 8th grade I had decided that I did not want to live my life this way anymore. As a result, I started eating healthier and exercising regularly. Through this process I was able to lose over 100 pounds. By experiencing obesity, being bullied, and homelessness at a young age, I was able to develop the characteristics of being strong, driven towards success, and caring for others. Four years ago, I decided it was time to change my life. I no longer wanted to live in fear of what tomorrow might bring. The thought of waking up in the middle of the night, clutching my chest, gasping for air, was terrifying enough to keep me from falling asleep in the first place. Heart disease has a strong history within my family, and at the rate I was headed down obesity lane, I was giving it an open invitation. My mother knew this weighed heavily on my mind, as she had a massive heart attack at the young age of 42, so she took me shopping one Friday in September. She purchased my first active wear outfit, as well as, a pair of white and pink Nike tennis shoes. Little did she know that she was creating an exercise monster. Not only did…

    My Fitness Pal Essay

    • 493 Words
    • 2 Pages

Throughout the semester I have been recording my eating habits on my fitness pal. I knew before I even started using my fitness pal that my eating habits were not good and to be healthy I needed to stop eating food that was so bad for me. Even though it took me over half the semester to realize that, I now can say I am on a healthier track in life and could not be happier. Throughout this process I have learned what foods are healthier to eat and what foods are really bad for you. When I first started using my fitness pal I was eating fast food literally everyday because it was so easy and convenient for me to get between my classes. Foods such as hamburgers and chicken were what I was consuming everyday. I never cared about how many calories I was taking in. As a result from eating fast food everyday I felt tired all the time. Not only did I feel tired all the time, I was gaining weight, which is never a good thing. The more calories I was taking in, the more weight I was gaining. After I realized how bad the food was that I was taking into my body I decided to put a stop to it. I no longer eat fast food and I try to eat as healthy as I possibly can. Now I eat yogurt, salad, and subs a lot. I eat those things because they are no where near as bad for you as fast food is. Before my fitness pal I never worked out because I was too lazy to but that has also changed. Not only do I eat healthy now, I workout everyday. I am so glad that I have decided to make these changes in my lifestyle because I have started losing weight. Not only do I look better, but I feel so much better. I have a lot more energy throughout the day. My fitness pal really has helped me. It opened my eyes into a whole new direction of my life that I never thought was possible. I was never motivated to make myself better until I realized just what I was putting into my body with all that greasy fast food. I think this is…

    Change in Diet

I began this class with very little nutritional knowledge. During week one of this class, it became evident to me that my eating habits were completely unhealthy. Before taking this course, my interpretation of eating right consisted of eating foods that I thought were healthy, and basically sticking to that particular meal plan. I started this class coming off of a self-created protein diet plan of my own. My diet plan consisted solely upon eating cereal for breakfast, chicken breast, white rice, and egg whites for lunch, and drinking a protein shake for dinner, every week on days Monday through Friday. For the weekends, I would basically eat whatever I wanted. The weekends were considered my grace period where I was allowed to ignore my diet for two days. About a week or two before the course began, I had completely stopped my protein diet, and I was basically back to eating whatever I had a taste for at any given time of the day. I had lost all discipline and obedience to my “healthy” meal plan. The amount of meals I would have each day varied from one meal a day, to two or three meals a day. Rarely was it consistent. I would skip out on breakfast on many occasions. On some days, I would eat solely junk food all day long. Water was almost inexistent in my life.…

I can really identify with this article. I have struggled with confidence from the time I was in elementary school, and a lot of it comes from being overweight most of my life. I have felt the pressure of society to spend the majority of my life in a gym, and I blame myself for my weight because I don’t have the motivation to spend my life that way. I was amazed by the statistic that Martin gave that said dieting is ineffective 95% of the time. We always hear “diets don’t work” (albeit on commercials advertising a slightly different type of dieting), but for so many people to invest so much time, money, and hope into something that is only 5% effective blows my mind. They so desperately cling to their diets because they are so deeply afraid to live as a fat person. The only diet I ever tried was the South Beach Diet, and I felt so physically ill that I quit after two days. My body was telling me this wasn’t the right thing to do. I vowed I would never again try a fad diet, but even still I see my already skinny friends getting more skinny from doing this program and that workout that I feel like…
