GENERAL WRITING TASK I

Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing with regard to your advertisement asking people to contribute in solving local environment issues.
Although there are many environmental crises affecting our city at large and our area specifically, I would like to focus in helping to solve the most severe problem of water drainage. After recent rainfalls, there is a bulk of water stranded on the streets that makes it very difficult for the people and the automobiles to commute.
In order to play my part, I propose to volunteer for the clean-up of the gutters and assist the municipal employees in cleaning the jammed sinkholes and drainage pipes.
For the problem to not re-occur, it is highly recommended that regular checks be carried out to avoid any choking of the drainage pipes. Also, wider pipes can be installed that will ease the flow of gushing water during cases of heavy rain, floods and the likes.
I am looking forward to receive your prompt response.

Yours faithfully,
Jason Smith

Write a letter to your pen-friend and give him advice on how to improve his speaking, listening and vocabulary.

Dear Jason,
I hope this letter finds you well. In your last letter, you asked me to advice you on some simple practices that can improve your English vocabulary, speaking and listening skills. So I am writing to advice you the same. In order for you to speak better English, you should hold conversations with your English-speaking colleagues at work on a daily basis. This will give you an idea how native speakers formulate words and how they incorporate them in their conversations. Secondly, to enhance your listening skills, you should make every effort to watch English movies in your spare time, without the subtitles, for this will give you a sense of how the natives sound when they speak at their normal pace. Finally, to have a stronger vocabulary, it's preferable to keep a dictionary with you at all times which you can

Being a member of the Findlay OH community it has come to my attention how much damage rain and water can do. While our city has tried many different options such as sand bags. Built 3 reservoirs, and stopped building new houses in flood zones it just seems like none of them work. The problem is that Findlay is getting more rain than the Blanchard River can hold water, which is making the city of Findlay flood. In my opinion we have a couple of choices of ways to get around ruining our homes and lives, which would be corralling the rain to different location, creating more reservoirs, and probably the best solution, building floodwalls. As a community we need to look at all our options and come up with a plan.…

To this end, urban water professionals across the globe continually seek and research methods in transitioning current cities into water sensitive cities. In Brown et al. (2008), the authors cited Professor Tony Wong, CEO of the Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) that, “Water sensitive cities are resilient, liveable, productive and sustainable.” A water sensitive city would differ significantly from conventional urban water approaches which require a major socio-technical overhaul. The city of Kuching too is adopting this process.…

Manila Times (2013) said that a quick solution in solving flood problems in Manila is impossible. Different causes which consider a well researched and localized study to produce a sufficient solution have been pointed out by authorities and experts. According to a geology professor in University of the Philippines, Ricarido Saturay (2013) claims that urban growth and structures such as buildings and roads contributes to the increasing flood problems. Surface runoffs are causes of these structures. It was said that these surface runoffs are supposed to pass through sewage system, but because of poor construction the systems are incapable of accumulating all runoffs. One example of a sewage system that’s incapable of letting the flood run through it that was presented by the news from a blog in araia.net, is a creek called Canal de Balete, which is now buried under roads, the National Museum, Manila City Hall, Philippine Normal University, Hotel Indah, and SM City Manila. Another cause of flood that was presented by Saturay (2013) is inability of the sewer and/or river to hold the amount of water in it. He stated that if those cannot hold contain all the water, then it will cause flood. He then suggested that different causes of flood in Metro Manila should be considered and not just concentrate on the garbage or informal settlers. With the cause of great floods, The Philippines’ Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) plants to restore fifteen pumping stations and drainage channels and to develop waterways and river basins around Metro Manila, and this was expected to be done by the year 2035.…
