In the cafeteria, the milk chest is reached into many times, leaving the chocolate milk section empty. This example happens in every school and with obesity on the rise, should schools ban chocolate milk? In this essay, I will explain the reason why we should ban chocolate milk because of the sugar, the flavor and the effects of obesity on kids who drink chocolate milk.…
Since rBST was approved in the United States; scientist, politicians and dairy milk producers have argued for or against its use. The truth is that many studies have been done and the lack of arguments and scientific proof about possible repercussions is the main reason why it is still legal.…
In the article “Lunch Lessons by Ann Cooper the author is discussing the rising problem in America with childhood obesity and the connection to the school lunch. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has put out a report stating if the problem with childhood obesity does not get under control by 2018, thirty to forty percent of the children in the United States will be obese. According to the author one major cause of this growing weight problem with today’s youth is the quality of lunch the youth are receiving while in school. Instead of supplying school age children with a healthy and nutritious lunch they instead receive foods that are less expensive and can be served in bulk.…
It has been proven that school cafeteria lunches have lower quality meat than McDonald’s food. In addition to their unappetizing taste and low-nutritional content, these lunches provide little energy, and children rarely finish at least half of their tray. Students are often given a inadequate variety to choose from, and are usually forced to eat something unappealing to them. Communities are to take action on this matter before their children develop long-term health issues as a result. I argue, however, that public school cafeterias give children food that is detrimental to their health.…
Over 30 million kids and teens go through school cafeteria lines every day in America and due to the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which took effect in 2012. They are no longer served good greasy pizza, salty French fries as well as sauced up chicken wings. Meals now a days must be low in fat,low in calories and sodium also must contain lean proteins, fruits and vegetables along with whole grains. Students from coast to coast are not liking the change.Food and nutrition directors at school districts nationwide are saying “that their trash cans are overflowing while their cash register receipts are diminishing” as children either throw away the healthier meals or bring lunch from home. While no one can argue that the solution is to get rid of the law and go back to feeding children unhealthy yet good food.…
Schools have recently been reconstructing their lunches to prevent childhood obesity and create healthier environments. Although people may think the answer to the problem is taking away certain foods and stopping homemade lunches, only through the influence of healthy parents, control over cafeteria items children are able to purchase, and tolerable food that’s still wholesome, will students be able to have nutritious and balanced school lunches, and in turn, healthier lives. If a child’s parent is able to make them a healthy lunch they should be able to, however, some schools ban homemade lunches and leave no other option than to eat a school lunch or the child will not eat. Author Liz Goodwin makes known that students who go to school…
Recent data shows that an estimated 30.6 million US students eat school lunches, yet only 6% of school lunch programs meet the nutritional requirements made by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (“Three Facts About”). Although the lunch criteria has changed by requiring more fruits, vegetables, and whole grain choices, there are still countless steps to be taken to make school lunches more nutritious. In public schools, there are many unhealthy choices given to children for lunch, and there should be a change to offer healthier foods.…
The author of this article talks about the increasing number of obese children in America and what it will take to have healthy and nutritious school lunch programs provided to school children. During a survey performed by the author on many children who are suffering from obesity in America and the health problems these unhealthy school lunches are creating, the lunches were analyzed based on content of nutritional value and how harmful school lunches are to children. The author suggests a more nutritious and healthy lunch will help children’s obesity decrease so children will not have health issues linked to obesity and will also help him or her change eating habits (Hooker, 2009).…
There is a dramatic increase in the number of children who are being affected by diabetes and obesity in America. Sugary drinks and unhealthy snacks should be taken out of the vending machines in schools and replaced with healthier choices to help stop this dangerous trend. Some may argue that taking out the options it is taking away a student’s right to choose, however, by taking away the sugary drinks and snacks, healthy habits are encouraged, future diseases are avoided, and a healthier generation is brought…
Can you believe that so many children in elementary schools do not bring their lunch to school because parents feel that it’s more convenient or a time saver in the mornings, so their kids eat the school cafeteria food? This topic is fascinating because little do most parents know what kind of food their child is being fed. Everyone should be aware of the many risks that are involved when sending their children off to school with the expectation that their kids will get a healthy meal. Along with knowing that their child is getting a healthy meal, many can agree that eating the school cafeteria food is a leading cause in childhood obesity.…
Twice a day out kids eat unhealthy meals served at the schools. Ms. Obama said “If our kids are not getting adequate nutrition, even the best teachers will not be able to teach them effectively”(Obama 331). The kids need more fruits and vegetables in their diet. The “Child Nutrition Act” would give our school healthier standards. It would replace empty calorie meals with more fruits and vegetables, the fruits and vegetables they need for effective learning and brain functions. If the school are feeding our children unhealthy foods twice a day, it would undo the healthy eating habits learned at home. Once our schools begin to serve the healthy foods our kids need, the next step would be to ensure the parents have access to healthy food choices and not just fast food…
All across America, our youth faces an obesity crisis. But how exactly do we stop this obesity epidemic? It is a fact to anyone that children today are consuming so many snacks and beverages and eating too little nutritious foods. “Currently only 1%-2% of US children meet the recommended Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the national nutrition standards for dietary intake necessary for optimal health” (Crawford, 2011). Children’s intake in nutritional foods doesn’t even come close to the current recommendations. An important way we can provide for our children is give them access to healthier foods.…
Obesity among adolescents contributes to the most recent changes to improve nutrition and health to the breakfast and lunch programs. Studies have shown that one in three American children is considered overweight or obese; and unhealthy school lunches are contributing to problems. Obesity rates amongst children have increase rapidly over the last 30 years; with dramatic repercussions for our children and society. Today’s children are eating too many snack-like foods and beverages, and not exercising enough. Only 1%-2% of US children meet the requirements (Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the National Nutritional Standards) for dietary intake. What can we do to prevent childhood obesity; or is the lack of education about nutrition, food supply, or access to healthy and affordable foods? The federal government has just launched a new battle to strengthen the nutritional requirements for school lunches.…
School is defined as an institution for educating children. So should it not be teaching students about adopting healthy eating habits and lifestyle? Society is constantly surrounded by dozens of fast food restaurants, and tempted by junk food sold in convenience stores, supermarkets, and vending machines. Sure, these low price meals are made to excite our taste buds, but are they truly stimulating our health? To top it all, children are being exposed to non-nutritional goods sold in their school environment; it should most of all be a place where only healthy food choices are being reinforced and made available. Therefore, junk foods found in cafeterias and vending machines of elementary and high schools must be abolished because of their negative effects on the children’s academics, the unhealthy eating patterns it creates, and the increasing risk of health diseases, harming the future generations.…
In 2010, Michelle Obama’s Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act (HHFKA) was passed. The act was passed in order to make school lunches healthier and provide food for kids that can’t afford food or don’t receive food at home. Since the HHFKA was passed, school lunches have been undesirable, displeasing, and unsatisfactory. For instance, in the article ‘No Appetite for Good-for-You School Lunches’, student Malik Barrows claims how “before, there was no taste and no flavor. Now there’s no taste, no flavor and it’s healthy, which makes it taste even worse”. If the healthy food was exceptional quality the students wouldn’t have the mindset that all healthy food is distasteful. Students all over agree that the lunches are substandard and no one wants to buy them.…
