For my 1st quarter book report I read “Beyond Belief” which is written by Josh Hamilton. Hamilton is a Major league baseball player who now plays for the Texas Rangers and was named MVP two short season’s ago. Josh is a premier center fielder and the captain of his team, for the average person you may think Mr.Hamiliton lives the ordinary life of a sports star , the pretty women , fancy cars , huge house’s and the six figure pay checks. Even though this may be true, living an everyday lifestyle was extremely difficult for Josh throughout his whole life , you would think someone who is so well respected and idolized by many fans throughout the world would try to live up to his expectations, but that was not the case for Josh , he was addicted to cocaine and struggled with many other addictions such as alcoholism and having anger issues with his loved ones. Josh wrote this book to express his feelings and give readers a point of view on how thing’s may not also be the same as it seems. So next time you judge someone just by their appearance, financial situation or even idolizing someone just by the way they perform a certain thing, you might want to think that over.…

A hero sets goals and achieves them no matter the cost. A perfect example of this is our beloved Spanish teacher, Senorita Zavaglia. She’s accomplished so much in her life at such an early age. One thing that still amazes me is how many Ironman’s she’s done! An Ironman is a triathlon. It has a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, 26.2-mile marathon. She has completed 2 full iron mans and 5 half Ironman’s. Her fastest full was 13 hours 57 minutes and her fastest half was 6 hours 28 minutes. The full Ironman’s took place in Whistler and Zurek, Switzerland. And the half’s in Mallorca Spain, Bend Oregon, San Juan Puerto Rico, Victoria Canada, Coeur d’Alene Idaho. But one of her Ironman’s took a bad turn. As she was reaching on her bike to get the…

Gail Devers a retired Olympic track star and a Hall of Fame inductee once said, “Sometimes we fall, sometimes we stumble, but we can’t stay down. We can’t allow life to beat us down. Everything happens for a reason, and it builds character in us, and it tells us what we are about and how strong we really are when we didn’t think we could be that strong.” In Laura Hillenbrand’s nonfiction book Unbroken, the ambitious Louis Zamperini brought Devers words to life over the course of his track career and his perilous time as a POW. In short, because of Louis Zamperini undying need to succeed no matter the challenge that he faced, Hillenbrand gave audiences this unforgettable story of survival.…

By playing his guitar Claude helped Michelle to get to a place where she could let go and be happy with herself. Although Claude did not realize it at first, teaching himself to play the guitar in the hospital did not only benefit him. By doing so he helped others in the hospital to relax and for a moment forget about what was going on in their lives to get carried away by the music. In the story, Michelle thanks Claude for playing the guitar and tells him that it helped. In my opinion doing this helped Michelle to become somewhat of a hero. To me a hero is someone that believes in themselves and believes that with a positive attitude can change or influence other people. A hero is also a person that does their best to compliment what other people do around them. For this reason, even though I stated that Michelle was not the hero in the story she portrayed qualities of a hero. Without explaining anything Michelle let Claude know that he was helping her to get over having to stay in a hospital when no one else seemed to care . Playing his guitar was a very important factor which leads to Claude being the hero but Claude also assured Michelle that she should never give up…

For my paper, I chose to write about the short story, “I Stand Here Ironing,” by Tillie Olsen. In the story, a mother of a nineteen-year-old girl named Emily is ironing some clothes, as she is pondering a recent message she received from one of Emily’s counselors or teachers; a message of concerns with wanting to help her daughter. The mother begins to think back to the very beginning of Emily’s life. She starts stating all the various events that took place in Emily’s life that could have played a role in why Emily is the way she is now. These events had to do with Emily’s father walking out on them, Emily having to go to daycare in her early years, and also self esteem issues from not looking like the other girls in school.…

The heroes of today are not that different than the heroes of the ancient world. They have goals to achieve, obstacles to overcome, and quests to pursue. Their existence is necessary to inspire hope in generations of those struggling to survive and to find meaning in their lives. It could be said that our admiration and devotion to heroes is because we seek something that we can aspire to, whether it be to improve ourselves, to cope with our flaws, or overcome obstacles and succeed. Two examples of great role models, both past and present, for learning how to overcome obstacles and succeed are: Gilgamesh and Superman. During their obstacle-filled journeys of achieving goals, both heroes experience failure and success. In addition, both heroes receive critical help along the way.…

This adversity did not stop her from continuing her life. She was destined for greatness and graduated from Harvard Law School. Would these talents and achievements have arisen were it not for the accident? Possibly, but Horace makes a good point when he states that adversity “has the effect of eliciting talents.” In other words, challenges bring forth talents and skills you may not have known you had.…
