Two Descriptions Paper
I’m currently in southern Afghanistan surrounded by rugged mountains, guard towers, razor wire, and lots of military soldiers and vehicles. The sky is grey, visibility is very low from all of the dust in the air, the wind blows at a constant speed of about 20 knots and the temperature is scorching 85 degrees.
There are some villages, no schools, no running water, no electricity, and there is only one paved road for miles. There is the constant smell of burning trash and there are hundreds of stray roaming about dogs. There are other forms of wild- life such as the scorpion, the cobra and various other snakes. Lots of Military vehicles patrolling the area.
.
I am currently here in southern Afghanistan. The temperature is 80 degrees with light rain; the rain keeps some of the dust down, and even though we are surrounded by desert and mountains, there are patches of green in the desert. You can see the shepherds in the fields nearby bring their goats and sheep out to graze in the fields. There are people in the local villages who go out to the open markets to shop, farmers plowing the fields and horse drawn buggies. It looks like a place that time has preserved, like something out of the bible.
Analysis
I created the differing impressions by focusing on the negative aspects of Afghanistan and the positive aspects of Afghanistan. The strategy that would support this would be, select detail that support your
Intentions; omit or de-emphasize others. I tried to give the reader a good description in both paragraphs so that when it came time to make a decision on visiting or not visiting he or she would have enough information in order to make to make the best decision possible. I have learned from this exercises that as a writer you have the power of persuasion based on how well you describe a person, place or thing.

We arrived in Country in June, and the temperature was already ranging between 110 to 115 degrees in Jalalabad. The turbines form the Chinook only added to the scorching temperature which did not help us out at all. Several of the guys were becoming hot weather casualties, but we pushed all the way through to Forward Operating Base (FOB) Bostic. All personnel we dropped off at FOB Bostic except the Commander, the Field Support Officer, half of second platoon, and I. We took a connecting flight out to COP Keating/ OP Fritsche in a Chinook helicopter, the only way in and out of our area of operation. The Platoon Leader (PL) and half of 2nd…

Yet while our principles continue, unscarred and secure, the same is not true in Afghanistan. There, the peaceful teachings of Islam have been cast aside, and instead are used to promote violence. There, women have no rights to education. There, human trafficking and massacres against civilians have become common. There, leaders are self-appointed. We are fighting for their safety and protection as much as our own. The battle we share stems from a desire to fight those oppressing freedom, not civilians caught in the crossfire. Food, refuge, and medical aid will be available to our friends.…

The first thing you notice is the home of a resident which looks like it has been made out of scrap and recycled material. The garbage overflowing from the bins onto the streets is the next thing you notice. There is also a wild, untamed dog on the street. There are also no visible roads. Another thing to note is that almost all the people on the photograph are wearing the same coloured clothes displaying the poor wages.…

An old black and white photograph, of what looks to be a town or community nestled in a valley of mountains, is weathered and damaged. In the photograph, over a dozen buildings are scattered across a small piece of land; what looks to be the equivalent of about four blocks in today’s terms. A railroad runs through the middle of the town, disappearing into the mountains beyond. The land is bare. There are no trees on this land aside from the ones outlining the town. The buildings are cabin like and made of wood. There are a few barns and some bigger buildings that could have been trading posts or a type of storage building. Two of the buildings at the bottom of the photograph look the same. They have one glass pane window on one side, which can help you to imagine how small these are. Both houses are fenced in. They also have porches and chimneys.…

Land preparation for farming and animal rearing was done using a method called girdling – tree killing. They will cut around each tree to stop nutrient from getting to the tree and the leaves will later felled down. They will now come back and cut the branches of the trees and burn the underbrush. Farmer starts plowing as the trees stumps decays and stones will be removed from the fields. Fields for farming are always small because of labor and there are boundaries between fields and the neighbors. The house or the farm was viewed as the workplace. And land given out to each family will be fenced to stop cattle from wandering off going into the farm areas. The land allocated to each family will show the family social status within the community. The towns developed individually and community involvement was given a great significant although the community was close knit.…

As I sat on my steps in the front of my house, I could not help but notice how much it had felt like fall. You could smell the rain from the day before from Hurricane Isaac that had finally stopped after raining for a whole day straight. In addition, you could see the leafs changing to its beautiful red, orange and yellow colors and falling off the trees which of course were mostly landing on my car. While I was sitting there in the perfectly shaded area, I was reminded of how much fun being a kid when I saw a few kids chasing each other on their bikes. In addition, while sitting there I could hear many different things that were also going on. I could hear the sound of a hammer from my neighbors working hard, as they continued putting yellow siding up on their house. I could also hear dogs barking along with the sound of my other neighbor across the street mowing their lawn, which was green and brown from the hot summer we had. Along with all of that, at the end of my street I could see a loving mother comforting her child that was crying because he fell.…
