Toefl Essay. Way of Communication
There are different ways to communicate. Some people prefer to communicate over the phone or using e-mail, other people prefer to communicate face to face. In my opinion, it is better to communicate face to face for several reasons. I think, it is much more interesting to have a conversation face to face and it is much easier to understand an interlocutor, his gestures and intonation.

Firstly, seeing an interlocutor in person is much more interesting than using a phone or e-mail. It is possible to arrange a meeting with him in a restaurant, café or in a meeting-room. For example, I love spending time with my friends in bars and cafes, we could chat and have the best memorable time together. We usually discuss personal things, drink coffee, chat and laugh a lot. These things make my life more interesting and fun so I prefer seeing my friends in person rather than talking to phone or texting them. Seeing an interlocutor face to face could help in building good relationships with a person. For example, sending a message or a letter might be too official for a person. Speaking about myself, once a friend of mine congratulate me for my birthday using SMS. I got angry because I would like to meet her and hear her wishes in person. That is why e-mails, messages might be too official in some cases.

Secondly, seeing an interlocutor face to face is a good way to understand him better. Understanding his body language is very important. When you see your companion, you can determine his gestures and their meanings, his attitude and character. For example, when somebody is not sure in the information he is giving, he touches his forehead or nose. When a person is listening to you attentively, he looks in your eyes with an interest, when a person lies, he usually do not look at you at all or tries not to have an eye-contact. These things are very important for the understanding of the interlocutor’s character and manners.

Verbal communication, either over the phone, video chat, or in person is less likely to be misunderstood. The reason for this is most people can verbalize there sentiments much more easily, allowing them to communicate there more clearly. Various characteristics, such as, body language, facial expressions and vocal tones are definite indicators of how the person is feeling at the time when communicating in person or by video chat. Texting can potentially be misunderstood as the reader cannot properly assess the mood of the person who is ending the message. A statement that is meant to be humorous can be taken seriously, and conversely a serious comment can be taken casually, leaving the reader and sender with a misunderstanding. An area of equal detriment is that the texting is limited to your writing skills. If the sender cannot express themselves well with writing, the reader can become confused or misinterpret what the sender is trying to say. This will cause a breakdown in communication and could quite possibly end in an argument. The use of acronyms can also be very confusing for those who do not text frequently. I have found that I get confused quite often because I do not utilize texting as often as others and I am not familiar with the multitude of acronyms that are used.…
