The Positive Psychological and Emotional Effects of Playing Video Games
There has been many studies on the side effects of playing video games, and majority of the studies that I have read about usually focus on behaviors that are aggressive and rude due to intensive video gaming that involves violence. Norcia argues that, “games with violent content are linked to more aggressive behavior” (pamf.org). However, these studies also use disclaimers, which indicate that their findings are inconclusive. Norcia also mentions that, “some video games may become hazardous for some players in some situations, but certainly not all” (pamf.org). Moreover, video game players, including myself, dispute these studies which only look at the destructive behavior changes it may incur. Video games can influence a person in many more ways than just an increase of aggressive behavior. A 2014 review article published in American Psychologist The benefits of playing video games ending words were, “Finally, we end with a call to intervention researchers and practitioners to test the positive uses of video games.” I too think that it is time for us to take a look at the positive properties of video gaming and how it affects us psychologically and emotionally. What are the psychological and emotional benefits? Stress reliever, introduce you to people/social life. feeling of accomplishment.
Video games aren't just used for entertainment like they were in the past, but as a break from stress, life duties, or things that become increasingly difficult with time. As stated before by Sean a first year college student, “College is tough. The more work I do, the further my goal seems. I occasionally play video games to boost my mood. The games that I am drawn to are the ones I’m able to pick up and quickly make progress through.” (blogspot.com). Immediate feedback is provided to players as they solve problems and

When looking at a deeper perspective, there are more positive effects found in, “Pro of Reality”, by James Paul Gee where he often mentions, “Different types of video games can have different kinds of effects”. He starts by expressing how games like Tetris, Bejeweled and Trivial Pursuit are fun, but also help exercise the brain by visualizing the patterns repeatedly. These particular patterns help develop the memory of the brain (Gee1). In the article, “How Do Video Games Affect the Developing Brains of Children and Teens”, by Amy Paturel, she states, “practicing anything repetitively physically changes the brain. With time and effort, you get better at the specific tasks your practicing.. Those repetitive actions and thoughts stimulate connections between brain cells…

There are many negative effects of playing video games. However, the view of positive psychology is starting to be seen in video game research. Researchers have studied some of the many the positive effects, and the wide range of possible benefits, of playing video games (e.g., Allaire et al., 2013; Granic, Lobel, & Engels, 2014; Johnson, Jones, Scholes, & Carras, 2013; Khoo, 2012). They are out seeking to explore the various methods in researching the beneficial effects of playing video games, as well as the theories of mechanisms by which these effects may occur. They want to show how content and context are during interaction, and or moderate differentially effecting pro-social behavior to playing the video game.…

In a $25 billion dollar industry a year, video games are an outlet for most kids and adults to escape reality. I know all of our parents at one point or another have told us to stop playing video games because it will rot your brain. Is that really the case though? I believe video games have a positive effect on your brain and throughout this essay I will explain why. Now there is no need to tell me the negatives like, kids become anti-social, they just sit inside all day and get fat, or maybe develop violent behavior. When did video games start having these so called negative effects? In my case never. I have been playing video games since I can remember. I am not anti-social, my friends sometimes say I'm too skinny, and in no way am I a violent person (unless I need to be). Video games somewhere down the line got a bad rap, and violence was the main contributor.…

People seem to have different perspectives on video gaming. Some may say that its bad for you and others may disagree. Steven Johnson, the author of Everything Bad is Good for You, believes that video gaming comes with many benefits. Unlike reading books, video games actually help you trigger your mind and make you analyze situations, he admits. He also claims that when reading a small portion of your brain is devoted and when it comes to video games you trigger most of your senses. When playing video games there are two stages you go through, they are probing and telescoping. Probing is the ability of searching and discovering options as he is introduced to the game. After discovering and understand the game better it leads the player into making decisions which is what Johnson describes as Telescoping. From my own experiences I have to agree with Johnson, I feel that video games can be very helpful and can even improve out academic performance.…

Do video games infect children and force them to act out violently? With incidents like Columbine High School and Sandy Hook Elementary society, and the media, has strived to find a connection in these school massacres. These incidents occur at the hands of children and adolescences and they all played video games. The media has ultimately decided that these violent video games may be to blame. After every school shooting this is information the media will often attempt to verify. Most of today's youth play some form of interactive software via PC or game console. So the question is “why do so few become violent if so many play”? Despite this controversy video games continue to become more violent.
