As feminism values grow more popular in the modern world, more young girls are taught to dress for themselves, rather than in ways society suggests they should dress. Hannah Berry, a former student at Wright State University, analyzed two shoe ads and their effect on the ways society suggests young girls should dress. She argues how two shoe companies, Clarks and Sorel, remind girls that natural beauty comes from being uniquely themselves. I believe Berry has a valid and supported argument, but there are flaws in her evidence that lead me to provide a counterargument. Young women continue to establish their own guidelines regarding what they can wear everyday to distinguish themselves. However, there is still a social stigma seen in both ads that suggest beauty is the true key success.…

Ads R Us is a novel by Claire Carmichael, targeted at a young adolescent audience. It is a dystopian fiction and gives the reader an insight into a world of advertising and how the protagonist of Barrett is affected by it. Obliged to leaving an eco-cult civilisation called Simplicity once his uncle had perished, Barrett finds himself with his rich Aunt Kara and Uncle Adrian and spoiled cousin, Taylor, in The Chattering World; to which he is entirely unfamiliar. In the duration of time that he resides there, he discovers that deceitfulness is being employed for the monetary benefit of individuals who possess power and authority. Advertising is extremely important to the success of a product being sold. Willifood advertises its apple chips in an intriguing way. In this advertisement, the first thing viewers are drawn to is the cartoon man standing in a dark room, creating an antagonistic emotion toward this man. He is overweight, middle aged, and is portrayed to have a belly that looks like a cheeseburger. His clothing does not fit him, causing his stomach to fall out of the clothes, creating the illusion of a hamburger patty. The layers in which he wears his undersized t-shirts forms the impression, to the viewers, of a sesame seed bun, a tomato, and a slice of cheese. The man’s hands are positioned in a way that he seems to be holding his stomach like he would a cheeseburger and has a huge grin on his face expressing his desire to eat his own cheeseburger belly. In the bottom right corner of the print ad is the actual product in its original packaging and displays the message of the ad with a slogan that reads: “Don’t treat your body like junk.” Willifood sells its product to unhealthy eaters by diverting their attention to the message the ad portrays, instead of the product, resulting in the shift of attention back to the apple chips.…

Milk is refreshing, muscle building, and nutritious. “Got milk?” uses this advertisement to get this point across. It consists of Taylor Swift, whose portrait is in the center of the ad, flirtingly leaning on her dark red guitar lined with a light tan rim. Her smooth pale face is slightly tilted to the right as she is seductively gazing into the camera with her starry brown eyes. She has a gentle, small, pearly white smile, which is adorned with the white stain of milk. She is wearing large hoop earrings, one of which is covered by her slight hand, leaning on her graceful neck, and a silk bracelet. Both are jewel studded and colored light brown to compliment her blondish tan spaghetti strap dress that matches her flowing slightly curly golden hair. In the…

Out of all of the strange, funny, or even controversial advertisements and pictures plastered all over the internet, Victoria’s Secret has had their fair share of controversy surrounding their advertisements. In this Ad, Victoria’s Secret is trying to promote the different types of bras they offer and how they supposedly have one for every body shape and type. They show ten models; all with “different” body types standing and modeling the different types of bras that they offer. The text incorporated into this ad reads: “A Body for Every Body. Perfect Fit. Perfect Comfort. Perfectly soft. Find Your Favorite.” When analyzing this image, the viewer can come to the conclusion that the advertisement and company is close-minded about beauty standards and bodies by claiming that they offer a bra for “every body” and every type, while using contradictory visual techniques to state otherwise.…
