By uncovering indictments on the advertising world, we can further understand why advertisements are under heavy scrutiny. In the article "The Indictments Against Advertising", authors Courtland L. Bovée and William F. Arens discuss the criticisms of advertising. The article informs the reader about the effects of how different advertising schemes affect our minds psychologically and make us too materialistic. Our views are swayed to thinking that we need more material things in our lives to be happy. Advertising influences us to buy more by promising a greater status in the world, which is rarely the case. Critics say that advertising does not promote enough cultural and spiritual values. Advertising takes its defense by claiming that without its effects, the educational and cultural events such as books, operas, and musical events would not be as successful without proper promotion. However, at the end of the day, the goal of advertisers is to sell products, not make an impact on the cultural and spiritual concerns of society. Women argue that some advertisements do not recognize that they are not being included into our society. This is not particular to only women 's rights groups but also in groups against racial and ethnic bias, animal abuse, and other issues. Even after advertisers being told that their advertisements were not open-minded, the efforts of these groups have had little effect.

The truth behind a company 's product could remain hidden from the public. The advertisements may be misleading and deceptive. Critics believe that if a company is unrepresentative of its product, a loyal consumer may become an adversary to the company. Advertisers are not afraid to admit that the power of advertisement has been misused over the years but they claim they are not the ones to be blamed.

The effects of advertising on our minds have left a scar on the name of advertisement. The criticism has piled up and is now a name that advertisers must live with. They will constantly be reminded that too much advertisement, while good for the company, is not good for society.
