Every story needs a hero. In the Odyssey, the characters face challenge after challenge and they had a leader that helped them overcome every obstacle. Odysseus was this leader and he is considered the hero of the story. He is considered the hero because of how he handled the situation with Polyphemus. His journey was dangerous and hard but he persevered through it and was able to overcome every obstacle that was put in his way. The encounter with Polyphemus was one of the defining moments where Odysseus truly become a hero. When Odysseus first landed on the island of Polyphemus him and his crewmates were very curious about what might be on the island. Odysseus was no hero and his words and actions clearly show. Book 1 of the Odyssey starts with “Sing in the, Muse, and through me tell the story of that man skilled in all ways of contending”. Introducing Odysseus as “a man skilled in all ways of contending” shows Homer, author of the Odyssey clearly wanted Odysseus to be seen as a hero. After all, they were both Greek, and the Greeks held a lot of pride they needed to protect. This makes me believe that the story behind The Odyssey was twisted so that the reader was forced to see from the perspective the author wanted.…

In “The Odyssey”, Odysseus is a hero because of how he got all the suitors out of the house. I believe that he is a hero for that because of the way that they just moved in and tried to marry his wife. Also that they were eating all of his animals fruit and other things also that they were drinking all of his wine. They were also mean to his servants and to son which made him mad at them. Then when he came they did not know and they were treating him like that he was nothing and that he should die. So that is the reason why he had to kill all of the suitors.…

Odysseus: a hero in every way. He is a real man, skilled in the sports, handy with a sword and spear, and a master of war strategy. Most of the challenges and adventures in his return voyage from Troy show us this even if we had no idea of his great heroic stature and accomplishments in the Trojan war. I found in my reading of the Odyssey that most of the trials the gods place upon him are readily faced with heroic means. These challenges are not…

Odysseus was a very arrogant man, he wanted people to know, Odysseus was in town. I believe that this even went into his own personal life. While at the war at Troy and on his adventure back, Penelope was having to keep suitors off her back. Once odysseus comes home, he is mad that they would do that kind of thing to him. Odysseus kills all of the suitors. He had a right to kill them, although there is always 2 or more ways to do or say something, and he could have handled it more humanly. When you think about all that the suitors did to Odysseus, like raping the maids, or drinking and destroying his home. Attempting to marry his wife, and was going to kill his son. Not to mention not being nice or hospitable Odysseus, or as they knew, a beggar.…

I could support Merriam and say that Odysseus fits many of these descriptions and characteristics. In the words of Margalit Finkelberg:…
