Odysseus had to leave behind his new born son, Telemachus and his wife Penelope to go fight in the Trojan War, Odysseus had been gone for approximately 20 years. I believe Odysseus is the hero because he is cleaver, brave, and is usually better off working on his own, he’s independent. When Odysseus and his men had come to Polyphemus’s cave they had no clue where or who’s home they were in. Odysseus and his men helped had helped themselves on resting in the Cyclops home and eating all his food and wine. When Polyphemus had came into the

Odysseus was no hero and his words and actions clearly show. Book 1 of the Odyssey starts with “Sing in the, Muse, and through me tell the story of that man skilled in all ways of contending”. Introducing Odysseus as “a man skilled in all ways of contending” shows Homer, author of the Odyssey clearly wanted Odysseus to be seen as a hero. After all, they were both Greek, and the Greeks held a lot of pride they needed to protect. This makes me believe that the story behind The Odyssey was twisted so that the reader was forced to see from the perspective the author wanted.…

Although these predicaments were extremely challenging, Odysseus always found a way to survive. His survival depended on his mind and body combined. In “The Odyssey”, Odysseus is a hero because of how he got all the suitors out of the house. I believe that he is a hero for that because of the way that they just moved in and tried to marry his wife. Also that they were eating all of his animals fruit and other things also that they were drinking all of his wine. They were also mean to his servants and to son which made him mad at them. Then when he came they did not know and they were treating him like that he was nothing and that he should die. So that is the reason why he had to kill all of the suitors.…

On the subject of heroism, Maya Angelou once wrote that “I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people” (Angelou). The general picture that comes to mind when the word “hero” is said is the idea of Superman or Wonder Woman; however, a true hero is anyone who tries to make their world a better place. Odysseus, the hero in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, fought in the Trojan War and embarked on a ten year journey to return to his kingdom, Ithaca. During his quest to return home, he encounters many supernatural forces that show both his heroic, and not so heroic actions. He faces countless challenges, meets new people, and has to make sacrifices for the overall benefit of his crew (Bowler and Homer 645-705).…

In the vast tellings of Homer’s The Odyssey, many character comparisons can be made. Few are more pressing however, than the heroism of Odysseus and his wife, Penelope. Although both Penelope and Odysseus displayed heroic characteristics in The Odyssey, Odysseus was more of a hero than his wife was in the epic. Penelope, while somewhat of a heroine, simply was not depicted by Homer to be the hero that her husband was.…

Odysseus is not a modern day hero because he tricked his men into thinking that he has logos. He convinced his men to be as brave as he is when they were going to fight through scylla. He does this because he knew he whould not get eaten while his men whould. as shown in this quote he gives his men ethos to get them ready “Well, I walked up and down from bow to stern, trying to put heart into them, standing over every oarsmen, saying gently, have we ever been in danger before this.” after he told them this they went to scylla and fought. Odysseus also has bravery when he stabbed the cyclops in his eye, he told him that his name is nobody to trick him. he also disguised his men as sheep so that they could get out of the cave. In the Odyssey, Odysseus has been portrayed as a war hero. His characteristics on the other hand, portray a villain. In Book 9, Odysseus stole Polyphemus’ sheep, as well as blinded him. Polyphemus was considered a villain when he held Odysseus captive, yet Odysseus was still a hero when he stole his sheep in the first place. This shows that heroes gained their glory by taking over other regions. Heroes sacked cities, heroes attacked the innocent, heroes fought for what they thought was right. The time period the Odyssey took place revolved around fighting. As a result, the heroes were then based on who ever sacked more cities, not an impact of the greater good. All in all, a hero is shaped through portrayal and the time period.…
