Odysseus was no hero and his words and actions clearly show. Book 1 of the Odyssey starts with “Sing in the, Muse, and through me tell the story of that man skilled in all ways of contending”. Introducing Odysseus as “a man skilled in all ways of contending” shows Homer, author of the Odyssey clearly wanted Odysseus to be seen as a hero. After all, they were both Greek, and the Greeks held a lot of pride they needed to protect. This makes me believe that the story behind The Odyssey was twisted so that the reader was forced to see from the perspective the author wanted.…

“The Odyssey” , by Homer is an epic poem telling the journey of Odysseus on his way back home to Ithaca. All heroes have different qualities that define them and Odysseus had the traits of a H…
In “The Odyssey”, Odysseus is a hero because of how he got all the suitors out of the house. I believe that he is a hero for that because of the way that they just moved in and tried to marry his wife. Also that they were eating all of his animals fruit and other things also that they were drinking all of his wine. They were also mean to his servants and to son which made him mad at them. Then when he came they did not know and they were treating him like that he was nothing and that he should die. So that is the reason why he had to kill all of the suitors.…

An epic hero is a figure of great, larger-than-life stature where his most remarkable traits are those valued by his culture. The Odyssey by Homer, tells a fascinating story of king Odysseus, who takes a twenty year journey in order to return to his home of Ithaca after his great victory in the Trojan War. After many years of life risking danger, is Odysseus really considered an epic hero? What makes a true epic hero? Odysseus’ pride, intelligence, and courage are the exact traits found in an epic hero.…
In the Odyssey, we are introduced to odysseus as a battle hero. Nowadays when you hear of a soldier or general, most people think of a hard muscley guy that shows little feelings. That is accurate to who odysseus was right after the long battle of Troy. What changed him from that to a wise more caring and clever man was the journey home and the obstacles it contained.…
Odysseus’s tale has been told several times, and most depict him as an epic hero. In fact, he shows several qualities one finds in classic Greek heroes, such as Achilles, Hercules, and Theseus. Like most epic heroes, Odysseus has been mostly harmed by the gods. From him angering Poseidon by blinding his Cyclopes son Prometheus, to Zeus striking down his ship, Odysseus did not have the gods on his side during his journey home. Athena, however, aided him when he arrived to his homeland. Although she did not help during his travels, Athena assisted Odysseus in his battle against the suitors in his kingdom. She was one of the only goddesses on his side. Odysseus also possesses the personal qualities of an epic hero. He is confident and cunning,…
Odysseus shows he is undeserving of the admiration he receives through his selfish, merciless, and disloyal actions as well as his lack of leadership and reliance on the Gods. Throughout his trip home, Odysseus faced countless obstacles and acted cowardly when trying to overcome them. Whether it was his willingness to betray his wife by sleeping with another woman in order to progress his trip or killing his own men when they disobeyed, Odysseus is not heroic. Although fame may bring you the title of hero, it is unjust to be considered heroic if you are a terrible…
What is an epic hero? Homers’ “Odyssey” is about an epic hero named Odysseus and his quest home. “The Odyssey” begins after the Trojan war had left Odysseus trapped, pointlessly seafaring for 10 years after angering Poseidon, the god of the sea. He tries desperately to return home to Ithaka and his wife, Penelope, and newborn son, Telemachus. Odysseus then has many hardships upon which he overcomes through his intelligence and wit. Odysseus is an epic hero because he is intelligent, he listens to the god’s advice, and he is witty; able to think on his feet. With the help of the gods he can survive things most men couldn’t.…

Superheroes have become increasingly popular in recent times and most people have their favorite from Superman to Batman to the Avengers. Not all heroes have to be superheroes with superpowers. Many people can identify heroes in their everyday life as well. Heroes can be someone that helps a person, for example many people consider their parents to be heroes because of the support they provide them in life. The difference between a superhero and a hero is that heroes are normal people just trying to be there for others while superheroes are made up characters in a book or movie with extraordinary powers. Mistakes are part of everyone’s life, but the difference between a normal person and a hero is that when a hero makes a mistake they work to fix it or overcome the problem. In the book the Odyssey, there are many problems and obstacles that Odysseus has to overcome in his attempt to get home. Odysseus has many traits that make him a hero, for example he is both physically and mentally strong. His…
In the Epic, Odyssey by Homer Odysseus has to save his men and get them home. Odysseus is a modern day hero hero. He qualifies for the job because first he is brave, cunning, and determined. He made smart decisions and knows how to get out of sticky situations. Second he is brave and he is ready for whatever comes his way. Although the ancient greeks consider odysseus a hero epic hero, according Modern day to Ethos and Logos he fails to measure by modern standards.…
In the Odyssey, Odysseus has been portrayed as a war hero. His characteristics on the other hand, portray a villain. In Book 9, Odysseus stole Polyphemus’ sheep, as well as blinded him. Polyphemus was considered a villain when he held Odysseus captive, yet Odysseus was still a hero when he stole his sheep in the first place. This shows that heroes gained their glory by taking over other regions. Heroes sacked cities, heroes attacked the innocent, heroes fought for what they thought was right. The time period the Odyssey took place revolved around fighting. As a result, the heroes were then based on who ever sacked more cities, not an impact of the greater good. All in all, a hero is shaped through portrayal and the time period.…
But that does not necessarily make someone a hero. Special Hero: What makes a Hero states that “It turns out a hero doesn’t have to fly. They are often grounded”(Emert 1). This says that people do not have to go on an epic quest or fight mythical creatures or have superpowers to be considered a hero. For example, firemen have been considered heroes and they do not have any powers or go on an epic quest, etc. In book 12 of The Odyssey, Odysseus says “We rowed on. The rocks were now behind; Charybdis too, and Scylla dropped astern.”(Homer 1136). When Odysseus and his men encounter these monsters, he does not save the day by saving his men when they are eaten by these monsters, and one of the key traits of being a hero is to save the day in the face of danger. While Odysseus does have some of the traits that we consider that makes someone a hero, Odysseus does not use them in times of need. In book 12 of The Odyssey, Odysseus says “The blind thing in his doubled fury broke a hilltop in his hands and heaved it after us.”(Homer 1121). It does not state in the story that he warned his men about the incoming mountain and did not do anything to stop it, he just let it happen and some of his men could have gotten hurt. He could have told his men that the mountain was coming or to look out, but he did not use some of the traits that make him a…
