There is no doubt that television holds a purpose in our society today, but is that purpose brain-numbing or actually beneficial to our brain development? The television, also known as: TV, the boob tube, the idiot box, as well as many other nicknames, has been around for almost a hundred years. Ever since cable TV became popular in the 1950’s, there has always been a worry that people watch too much TV. Most people believe that with exorbitant exposure to the popular media both dumbs us down as well as makes us more likely to tolerate acts of violence. Dana Stevens’ “Thinking Outside the Idiot Box” argues that television does not make you smarter, directly contrasting Steven Johnsons article, “Watching TV Makes You Smarter.” Television has definitely made a mark on our hearts and has most certainly made an impact on society, but too much of a good thing is never a good thing. The propaganda photo about television that was found on Facebook is a good lens that helps me understand Stevens’ argument better. The photo assisted the understanding of Stevens’ depiction and contradiction of Johnsons writing, her discussion about what these “more complex shows” are actually like, as well as her discussion about the national event TV Turn Off Week. This photo clearly depicts that TV does not enhance or benefit in brain production in any way, however it “destroys” the imagination, or what’s left of it, and in return, it fills the mind with complete nonsense, and therefore numbing the brain. The photo, which is a picture of a television, states, “My job is to help destroy what’s left of your imagination by feeding you endless doses of sugar-coated mindless garbage.” As humans, we are very complex intellectual beings, however television has been captivating our minds and bringing our intelligence down.…

Television is the main source of entertainment in America and across the world. Television is how we get our information about such things as: weather, breaking news, politics, and even just the latest celebrity gossip. Adults and children alike, watch TV to relax and learn about the world around them; but how much of that information is being retained is the question Neil Postman longs to answer. Based upon his essay “Television as Teacher” not much, Postman believes as stated “-reasoned analysis is increasingly supplanted by shallow images, thereby hindering the ways we learn about the world” (421). Postman goes on to describe his belief that television dilutes…
The main purpose of this article is to convince the reader of the negative consequences of television being watched by our younger generation. Not just the quantity but the quality as well. Some of the authors argue for intellectual value in the various media, depending on the consumer’s use or approach, while others see harm to both intellectual and social development. You should read the introduction from pages 211-12 and review the questions at the end of each reading, as well as review the notes from class discussions, to understand the issue. I have divided possible topics into the social and intellectual arenas, though you may prefer to overlap, and suggested several potential argumentative topics based on the readings:…
The estimated number of TV in homes is 109.6 million. (Parents Television Council, 1998) Many people know days always wonder whether television is bad. As well many have their views in which television is a learning tool or a bad influence for their children. There has been much research, which developed few issues between television and children coming from health issues to being use as a learning skill. As studies are developed there will always be health issues that will affect children that don’t have any physical activity as part of their daily routine. Others have discovered that sometimes watching too much TV can influence in how children’s attitudes and views can be affected. Children as they grow can retain many things which help them learn; as for example using television as a guide. There are many programs that are simply directed in children learning in order to have a better understanding of things. PBS is one of many shows that have been known to invest in children’s learning. Research shows both positive and negative influences on children and television. Television may have effects on children’s health, behavior, and learning regarding how they have activities with or consume television.…
The main purpose of the article “The Debilitating Effects of TV on Children” By Dr. John M Grohol, is that the more time children spend watching television, the more harmful it is. It is not only detrimental to a child’s education, but also socially and medically. Dr. Grohol believes that despite the negative effects television has on children, parents continue to allow children to watch way too much.…
Americans way of life has become entangled with television that an entire new approach of acting has been created. Television has been present since the 1950’s, and has only been growing ever sense. It did not take long for the television industry to branch out and take full advantage of this technology’s potential. With the advancement in programming and increased financial support, the world and its marketplaces were brought into the living rooms of viewers. With this, society became exposed to commercial marketing, situation comedies and drama, sporting events, music and theatre, game and talk shows and world news. Television is one of the main sources of entertainment, and is a continuous presence in most Americans' lives. In, “Television Addiction Is No Mere Metaphor” Robert Kubey and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi go on to say, “how easily organisms can be harmed by that which they desire.” (123) The impact of television effects the way American people live and act in their environment, however having and watching television keeps in touch with the outside world through the information it provides across the television with programs such as news as well as educative programs.…
Telepharmacy is the integration of pharmacy software, remotely controlled dispensing cabinetry and telecommunications technologies to enable the provision of pharmaceutical services from a distance. Telepharmacy expands access to quality health care to communities nationwide, primarily in rural, medically-underserved areas.[1] Telepharmacy is something that could greatly improve and advance the heath care word not only for providers but also for patients. Telepharmacy however has many legal and privacy issues to resolve before it can become an established part of health care. Due to the high regulations on pharmaceuticals from federal and state government, it is a challenge to dispense these products over an online system. To be a licensed pharmacy that dispenses drugs, both the pharmacy and pharmacist must be licensed by the state board of pharmacy. Internet sales complicate this requirement because of the likelihood that the requested drugs will be shipped out of state. Compiling with the home state as well as shipping state laws are something both pharmacists and pharmacies are required to do before the interstate sale of pharmaceuticals. Prescribing pharmaceuticals on the internet has become a forum for patients to abuse prescription drugs. The abuse is a growing problem in the United States partly due to the ease of purchasing drugs online. Pharmacists practicing telepharmacy have a duty to ensure that they are controlling dispensation so as not to aid in any illegal activity.…

This argument is not to say that television is wrong altogether. This argument is for the opposite. The argument is to point out the importance of balance in the brain for educational purposes. In order to remain a sentient thinker, one must keep the balance strong and exercised. This is done in order to avoid a world of passivism; our minds must be active and thinking at all times. We must transcend the cultural norm to act upon the change needed in society and the world. Do not feed upon the passive narcissism that cultivates a self-centered society, but become a sentient reader and transcend the cultural…
Watching television is an experience shared by adults and children. It is cheap, appealing, and in the reach of the public. In this way, TV has become an important mass media around the world. TV isn’t used in a way that people could get the best benefits from. My purpose of this essay is to argue my case that people shouldn’t watch too much television because the content of some TV programs are not educational. It makes people waste time that could be used in more beneficial activities; and it negatively affects people’s mental development.…
I would make the above facts comprehensible to the readers by some illustrations. Television, for instant, is gift of technology. But television has some negative influence on a person’s life. Television makes viewers passive. TV discourages communication. Families watching TV do very little talking except for brief exchanges during commercials. In this way TV weakens relationships by reducing opportunities for communication. Worst of all TV presents a false picture of reality that leaves viewers frustrated because they do not have the beauty or wealth of the characters on TV. The material possessions on TV shows and commercials contribute to the false image of reality. From their modest apartments, many viewers daily tune in to the upper- middle -class world that TV glorifies. When a person watches TV his mind goes into a hypnotic trance. In other words, TV makes us lose touch with reality.…
