COURSE DESCRIPTION

In the past twenty years, Excel spreadsheets have become the standard tool that business people use to model and analyze quantitative problems. The latest versions of these spreadsheet packages contain powerful analytical tools that could be possible only with mainframe computers and mathematically trained personnel two decades ago. This course covers up-to-date and practical spreadsheet modeling and simulation tools that can be applied to a wide variety of business problems in finance, marketing, and operations.

The topical coverage mainly consists of the following four modules: (1) data analysis techniques to find the most likely description of the uncertainty in future business; (2) deterministic and stochastic optimization techniques to determine the best managerial

This course introduces students to the use of the computer as a business modeling tool. The overarching goal is to teach students to use computers to analyze models and data for integrated decision making across multiple domains including finance, marketing, accounting, strategy, and operations. The course proceeds in several parts: 1) Data Modeling - building on INFO 1010 and MATH 1140, the course will review data modeling in Excel; 2) Deterministic Modeling - the course will cover decision-making under uncertainty using optimization models such as linear programming. Problems such as portfolio optimization, transportation, assignment, set-covering, and scheduling are covered and the concepts of problem formulation and sensitivity analysis are introduced; 3) Spreadsheet Automation - concepts for programming in Excel will be introduced; and 4) Probabilistic Modeling decision making in an environment of uncertainty is covered using simulation and the principles of decision analysis. Students will also learn to choose the appropriate probability distribution for a given problem.…

This simulation has given me a better understanding of what managers and CEO’s go through when making decisions for the company. As I went through each simulation more than once to see what affects the decisions had on cash flows, sales and EBIT. In some situations they changed whether it dropped or risen, and others they were completely stagnant with their movement through each phase. Below I will point out how and why I made each decision.…

After identifying the business problem of falling sales and an increase in rejections by the Swiss Official Chronometer Control, conducting a study for research will prove to identify a solution. Researchers performed a study of a sample population of 500 people. The study reveals 60% of the watches purchased are certified and the average rating of the SOCC certification as proof of quality is 3.9 therefore; consumers tend to believe the watches with SOCC certifications are of better quality. The study also reveals of the 39% planning on purchasing another watch within the next six months, 33% are willing to pay between $1,001.00 and $1,500.00 more for an Aquine watch. With that in mind, researchers do not believe advertising has anything to do with declining sales. Further research into the certification process is necessary because the study shows consumers rely on the certification as proof of quality and the rejection rate is increasing.…

In this work we have designed a digital 8-bit quantizer to reduce the number of bits involved in representing a real valued sample to a fixed point representation with reduced number of bits. The work also involved designed of a Binary to Octal encoder and corresponding decoder. The implementation of encoder-decoder involved conversion of the Fixed point number to Standard Logic vector. After the encoding and decoding process the Slandered Logic vector is converted back to Fixed point number then back to Real Number representation. Quantization error is calculated form the difference between input and output real numbers. We have utilized Xilinx ISE simulator and IEEE proposed Fixed Point package during execution of the projects. Figure 1 shows the block diagram representation of the proposed system.…
