Sustainable City
Energy use is one of the most important issues in the world today. People are starting to run out of energy already now, and in the future more and more energy is likely to be increasingly needed since the world population is growing. Fossil fuels are the main resources for energy at present. According to many predictions, we are going to run out of oil in 40 years and coal in 75-150 years. People were using these effective but non-renewable energy sources as much as they wanted for many centuries without thinking that these resources will not last forever, and that will cause big problems for future generations. Fortunately, there are also renewable energy resources, such as water, wind, solar, geothermal, biomass power - and they will not run out as long as the Earth exists. For instance, the amount of sun energy hitting the Earth in one minute is greater than energy consumption of the entire planet during one year! These sources of energy are not bad for the environment too, unlike fossil fuels which pollute it. We need to start using the renewable resources on a large scale, and we need to think of new effective ways to get energy. Until then we must save the energy we still have now, so there is as little wasting of energy as possible. Everybody has to be involved to make that work because if the world runs out of energy everyone will suffer.

We live in an urban world since the majority of people on our planet live in cities. Therefore our future is pinned on how we develop our cities and the neighboring areas, how good are our housing and transportation facilities, what technologies are used.

A sustainable city needs to use renewable energy technologies for its power supply facilities. Such technologies should be convenient to use, easy to run and maintain, as well as cost-effective. They should be long-lasting, and their operation should not have an adverse effect on human life and urban environment. They should also be able to generate considerably more

As human beings, we need energy for just about all functions associated with the luxuries of our daily lives. We need energy to heat our homes, to fuel our cars, to watch television in addition to industrial and agricultural purposes. How often do we stop and think about where all this energy is coming from? Energy is formed and disbursed through an industrial process that is performed using a number of different sources. Although there are a number of different sources, there are only two types of energy, renewable and nonrenewable. Renewable energy sources are naturally replaced in time. Because of this factor, there is little concern with running out of these energy resources. On the other hand nonrenewable energy resources are quite the opposite. These resources have the potential to run out because they are not replaced naturally in short periods of time.…

We as humans can do our part personally to contribute in energy conservation and helping to sustain the environment through using more energy efficient appliances which can be a bit costly at first but will save energy, the environment, and ourselves money in the long run. We as consumers can purchase compact fluorescent light bulbs that use less energy and last longer than incandescent light bulbs. And the next time you’re looking to purchase a new vehicle that is fuel efficient like a hybrid car which combines gasoline engines and electric motors. I think knowledge is power when it comes to each person doing their part so feel free to engage in more research on…

Firstly, the main feature of urbanisation is high population density, which may cause a series of problems such as the boom of squatter settlements and urban sprawl if the city has not been designed in a sustainable way. For instance, a large number of high-rise apartment has been constructed in urban areas for large scales of dwellers when the some ecocities were designed. Simultaneously, the authorities of these cities also provide basic sources and services for those who are living in the squatter settlements so that these residents could afford themselves and the environment of the slum will also be improved. Compared to merely dismantling the shanty houses which will cause the appearance of another new slum areas and even worse living conditions, what the governments in ecocities do has coped with the problems of urban space caused by urbanisation. Secondly, lack of urban transport, considered as a big challenge in the ordinary megapolis , can also be solved in a relative effective way in a sustainable city. More precisely, the reasonable plan of public transport is the best method to decline the automobile dependence in megacities. For example, a huge transit center has been established in Hong-Kong in order to avoid the dwellers' reliance on private vehicle. It is estimated that the metro has covered every section of Hong-Kong and even residents living in the edge of Hong-Kong could spend only 40 minutes to the urban area. Actually, the usage of vehicles in Hong-Kong is far lower than that in any other megacities even if there is no restriction on the usage of automobile and the gasoline price is also low in Hong-Kong. Obviously, the gigantic network could not be set up after the urbanisation formed. Thus, it is necessary to develop sustainable cities to prevent the possible urbanisation.Word…

Secondly, we should solve the problem on using sources effectively. For governments, they may propagandize and popularize energy conservation and environmental protection. Also, they can introduce policies to encourage citizens use alternative sources and set up a punishment system to regularize people’s behaviour , those rules may not satisfy people’s needs. In addition, companies should use alternative sources to replace non-environmental friendly sources to reduce rubbish output and sewage discharge. For citizens, they can use more alternative sources in their daily life, like they should find alternative means of transportation and they could purchase electric cars to replace cars with petrol engine. It is not only to protect environment but also to save money.…
