For example, in the first section of the book Charlotte could not trust her own fathers plans. The plans were for for Charlotte to get on the ship with two other families and travel to province. The two families did not show up. One family had and sick kid and the other could not make it. When Charlotte found about this very bad news. His name was Zacharia, Zacharia told Charlotte how bad of a man the captain was, but she did not believe what he said. She thought that he was a good man and would never do anything bad to hurt her. The captain thought of Charlotte as a good girl and would never disrespect him. Just when Charlotte and Zacharia get closer. The captain finds Charlotte's trust and Charlotte breaks it right in half. He chooses Zacharia to whip but he picked him for a reason. The reason was that he was the eldest man on the ship and the captain needed a younger set of hands. There is a twist, Charlotte angers the captain by saying he should not whip Zaccaria and Charlotte whips the captain across the face. The captain lost Charlotte’s trust because she disrespected him.
