Negotiation is the act of discussing or conversing with another person or persons with the goal of reaching a mutually agreeable solution. The agreed upon solution may be fully or partially agreeable to both parties. This process is used when one person needs or wants something from another and seeks to gain their support or cooperation in obtaining his or her objective (Lewicki, Barry, & Saunders, 2006). There are two types of negotiations. Collaborative negotiation refers to focusing on mutual gain for both parties, whereas adversarial negotiation seeks to maximize gain for one party or the other, but not both. In a collaborative negotiation, the two parties seek to come to an agreement through the strength of a relationship or multiple options. Adversarial negotiations have the parties withholding information and there is little regard considered for the relationship between the two parties.…

Word negotiation has a negative connotation. People think other party is trying to deceive them in order to get what they want. We negotiate almost every day over small things like negotiation with friends to choose a restaurant and a vacation place. Girard Nirenberg, the author of the first formal book on negotiation, explains it this way: "When two or more people exchange ideas with the intent of changing the relationship in some way, they are in negotiation." If we believe that explanation is accurate, it's really important to ensure that we negotiate for a win-win outcome and not negotiate with an intent to defeat the other party. While negotiating we should try to be honest and truthful, in other words, ethical to maintain a good relationship…

“Negotiation is a process of communication in which parties aim to ‘send a message’ to the other side and influence each other” (Beyond Intractability, 2003-2007). Communication techniques are a vital role in negotiating. Negotiating is about effective communications. When negotiating, communication occurs at two levels, the logical level and the pragmatic level (Lewicki, Saunders, & Barry, 2006). A logical and pragmatic message received by the other party is communication. What is said is not the only point, the information inferred, intended, conveyed, or perceived is a vital factor. Thus, tremendous care must be taken to direct pragmatic messages. In order to avoid sending the wrong message negotiators must be aware of the potential issues of pragmatic miscommunication (Lewicki, Saunders, & Barry, 2006). According to Nonverbal Communication (unknown), “nonverbal communications include all forms of communication that are not part of the language that we speak or write” (para. 4). Three types of nonverbal communication that affect negotiations are body…
