Statistics - Hypothesis Testing
Southwestern University Cebu City Graduate School of Health Science, Management and Pedagogy

Statistical Methods (EDUC 201) ACTIVITY 4
HYPOTHESIS-TESTING Instruction: Apply the five steps of hypothesis-testing procedure to each problem below.

1. A researcher conducted an experiment to determine the effect of a lecturer’s age on

student preferences to hear him lecture. In a regular classroom situation, 20 students were told that the administration wished to know their preferences regarding a forthcoming visiting lecturer series. In particular, they were asked to evaluate a professor who “might be visiting the campus.” The professor was described to all students in the same way with one exception: One-half of the students were told the professor was 65 years old: One-half were told the professor was 25 years old. All students were then asked to indicate their willingness to attend the professor’s lecture (higher scores indicates greater willingness). The following results were obtained:

(Scores of the Students Told Professor Was 25 years old)

X1 65 38 52 71 69 72 55 78 56 80

(Scores of Students Told Professor Was 65 years old)

X2 78 42 77 50 65 70 55 51 33 59

Problem 1 X1 = Professor is 25 years old X1 65 38 52 71 (X1)2 4,225 1,444 2,704 5,041 (x1 – x ) 1.4 -25.6 -11.6 7.4 (x1 – x)2 1.96 655.36 134.56 54.76

You are the manager of a large firm. Lately complaints have surfaced that an increased number of incoming calls are being dropped or misrouted. Yesterday, as you walked by one older employee, you noticed that he was fiddling with his hearing aid and not paying attention to the phone. A call came in and only because you were there and intervened was the call answered. This particular phone operator had been reprimanded three months earlier for tardiness. Your instinct is to fire this phone rep or encourage him to retire (he is old enough). You also know that this gentleman is well liked within the company. Pose several hypotheses that might account for the dropped or misrouted calls. How would you test these hypotheses?…

The results exhibited that the interaction of early child adversity severity and those stressful life events involved predicted an occurrence in a manner consistent with the research hypothesis for both the men and the women. Therefore, we reject the null hypothesis. There were some limitations to this research issue and the hypothesis testing procedure. The sample size and the number of past episodes were determined retrospectively, mainly through self-report. But, another thought to keep in mind is the individuals who experienced early child adversity had a significantly younger age of bipolar onset. Concerning this conclusion, it would be of great importance for the suggestion for further studies of stress mechanisms in bipolar disorder and of treatments designed to intervene early among those at risk. I would propose when and if the conditions of bipolar disorder are identified, an effective treatment plan needs to be implemented. This approach would be of great benefit for the patient 's health, wellbeing, and longevity. Studies speak for themselves regarding childhood adversity being prevalent and having pervasive and long term impacts on mental and physical…

Previously a group of friends compared the average temperature for the 15 days in each of the 2004 and 2005 Christmas holiday pubic school vacations to determine which holiday was colder. Secondary research retrieved from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration 's (NOAA) National Weather Service website provided climatic data on a daily basis for each day of the periods under investigation. Daily average temperature for each of the 15-day holiday vacation periods were gathered as two samples. The friends established a null hypothesis that the Christmas holiday vacation period of 2004 was colder than that of the 2005 Christmas holiday vacation period. After the completion of a five-step hypothesis test using a t-test, the null hypothesis was accepted. The acceptance of this null hypothesis led to further discussion on the comparison of the two periods.…

Inflation in the United States is at an all-time high. The recession of the U.S. economy only hinders people more with high gas prices. A one population test using the One Factor ANOVA test and a five-step hypothesis test can be used to determine if gas prices are equally high in many different states. The samples used to test the hypothesis come from data collected from 30 randomly selected gas stations in six different cities. The hypothesis test and some solutions to consider may have an effect on direct and indirect stakeholders and is very important to the economy as a whole.…

In the Harvard Business Review article "Market Lunacy," Lisa Burrell describes how researchers Ilia Dichev and Troy Janes asked the question whether the common belief that the moon changes moods and causes depression may actually be accurate or is it a myth. They believe that most studies have focused on extreme cases so they decided to focus on stock exchanges with the assumption that something that involves millions of people around the world participating in it every day should indicate any deviation from the norm. The researchers were looking at the hypothesis that depressed people affected by the moon will cause a drop in stock prices. Dichev and Janes looked to prove or disprove the theory of the moon affecting behavior, so they studied the daily median stock price profits of 25 stock exchanges over the last thirty years. In their findings, they learned that there is indeed a drop in stock price profits on the day of a full moon versus the day of a new moon.…
