Should Homework Have Academic Benefits For Students?
Homework does not have academic benefits for students. First off, homework is busy work and doesn't reflect class work. Kohn states in “Truth”, students who do not understand what's going on in class homework can make them feel stupid and they can get accustomed to doing the subject wrong. While on the other hand, other students could understand what they are doing and the practice is just a waste of time. The information shown proves homework does not have benefits for either spectrum of the students. Either homework makes the student feel stupid or is just pointless practice. In addition, Rhodes and Wilson state that Pasi reports students might not complete homework that they feel are routine and boring. Repetitive worksheets and handouts …show more content…
From the research in the study, Cooper found that elementary students get no academic benefit, besides reading practice, and middle/high school students get no gain past one-and-a-half to two hours of work per night. Students should not have to spend so much time on work that will not help them better themselves. For elementary students the reading practice is good and could help them in the future but teachers can just have them read for homework instead of having them do multiple worksheets. Students should not be forced to do work that will not help them achieve better academically. Moreover, some students can't even do their homework without the help of their parents. As stated by Monigone, homework should be something students can accomplish without parental support. Many students, when confused over their homework, look to their parents for help. Tactics similar to this would not help them in the future when they need to know the topics homework was showing. Students need to be able to learn the topics not just have parents do the work for them. If homework is assigned to students they should be able to do the work themselves. Continuously, Monigone reports that a students grades should be reflective of their work not their

Moreover, homework isn't only wasting the student's time but the teachers time as well. By marking and grading homework, teachers are wasting their time. So teachers, please don't blame us the we wasted your time. Some people assume that homework is useful for teachers to watch student's progress but I firmly believe that homework is sent home to test the parents, not the children. I think that teachers can watch the student's progress in school better because teachers don't know that at home who did the homework, the parent, the student or the internet (Google)??????? People also think that homework helps parents to understand that the school holds high goals for students. But, I consider that school work is harder than homework and that means that parents can understand that the school holds higher goals than they think. Furthermore, homework becomes terrible if no one can help you. If no one can help you then you are doing work that you don’t understand, and if you don’t understand it what’s the point having the work that you can’t even do. I really, strongly believe that more kids would stay in school and have a better learning experience if they did not have the stress of homework.…

Homework allows children to work at their own pace, without peer pressure and afraid of falling behind during class. Homework allows time to study for tests, and go over work that you did in class. To begin with, homework is taking way family time and fun time from students. Because students get a lot of homework they no longer have time to spend time with their family or have their own free time. For instance, in the article titled “5 Reasons Why Homework is Bad for Your Child,” the author states, “Children need time to spend with their family, catch up with friends and attend extracurricular activities so they can refresh their minds and bodies.” The reasons that are stated in the article specifically, are examples of how homework takes away family time. School is supposed to only take up to 6 hours but with homework it no longer take 6 hours of school work but more. Therefore, students don’t have enough time to do there own things.…

Many parents, teachers, and students argue over whether homework is good for students or bad thing to keep and whether it should remain as an everyday assessment given to students. A CNN reporter said “The data shows that homework over this level is not only not beneficial to children’s grades or GPA, but there is really a plethora of evidence that it is detrimental to their attitude about school, their grades, their self-confidence, their social skills, and their quality of life” (Levy). Homework should not be given to tots because homework causes problems at school, at home, and in their health.…

Does homework really help students improve their learning skills like teachers say it does? Well according to my research 75% of students say homework does nothing but give stress & anxiety. Me personally I agree with the statistics homework does give stress, I just don’t approve homework. It just isn’t fair for us students, because we go to school eight hours a day to get our education and do work, why would we want to do more work after hours when we get home.…

Since formal education, homework has been a mainstay for educator as a strategy from elementary through university level. It is a tool used by teachers to help students reinforce the skills given during class in hopes of achieving higher levels of student academic achievement. At different times in history, the idea of homework has been either supported or rejected by the culture. Today, homework is again a topic of much debate. But does homework have any sort of impact, negative or positive for students ages four through eight? “For elementary students, no amount of homework -large or small- affects achievement (Cooper 88). This means that children are often given homework assignments that have no value at all. On average my son receives 6-8 different types of homework sheets. I’ve mentioned before, homework makes my son uncomfortable. Looking at the homework closely I concluded that four of the sheets had minimum correlation to what the study plan was in school. No wonder my 1st grade child is confused and nervous when it comes to homework hour. It is obvious to me that children at a younger age are not capable of completing homework because they simply don’t understand. Keep in mind that not all homes are created equal and not all parents have the luxury to help their child in detail when they get stuck with their home assignments, obviously all children come from different backgrounds and it would only be fair if homework was looked at a little closer in a equally matter for all young…

Homework is an important part of the learning process in middle school. One reason is that homework gives students additional practice of skills covered in class. Middle school classes are too short to teach a new concept and practice it sufficiently for students to master. Students need both guided practice in class and independent practice at home. Another reason for homework is that it provides time to complete longer assignments. For example, the ideal composition process allows time for students to think and to reflect on their ideas, as well as time to revise and to proofread their writing. Also, reports and special projects often require research that can not always be done at school. In addition, since all students do not work at the same speed, giving students time at home to finish work keeps them from falling behind. Finally, the most important reason for homework is that it ensures review. New material and old material are practiced in daily assignments. Students who do their homework daily are prepared for tests and make better grades. In conclusion, not only is homework essential to mastering new skills and maintaining previously learned skills, but it also guarantees constant review and provides time for longer assignments, as well as additional time for students who need it. Students, do your daily homework, make better grades, and learn more!…

Second of all, sometimes, when a kid gets assigned homework, it will be from a lesson they just started learning, so he or she doesn’t have a lot of knowledge on it. When they come home, they don’t remember it very well, so they just try a method that makes since. But, if it’s wrong, then they will just be practicing and memorizing the wrong thing. This shows that if students try to go and do an assignment on a topic that they just learned, then they are going to have a lot of trouble understand and doing the work correctly. Another example is if they ask a parent for help, they could teach them the wrong thing because they learned it so long ago. Then the student would become confused and have to chose between two different concepts that they’ve learned. In addition, in a survey of 778 parents, 84% of the parents helped with homework. This proves that kids go home with lots of questions because they are still confused on the topic. This shows that because students are still confused, they have to ask their parents to help them, and most of the time even they don’t know how to do it the correct way. Clearly, because students are still confused on the topic they will either just do it the wrong way…

Also, based on the article, “No More Homework?,” in paragraph 3, the author states that parents have been pushing back against homework. They believe that their children need more time for family and other activities. Sometimes my parents do not appreciate that fact that I have a lot of homework because it means I have less time for my family and activities, such as going to parties and going out. Finally, homework often has a bad effect on students. According to the article “No More Homework?,” in paragraph 8, the author says, “The disadvantages of homework are clear to everyone such as exhaustion, frustration, loss of time to pursue other interests, and often a decrease of interest in learning."…
