Dear Friends, My name is Leslie Sickles, I am the Executive Secretary and Christian Education Coordinator for Elmwood Avenue Presbyterian Church in Erie PA. I am familiar working with our Presbytery as I was the Chairperson for Christian Education and currently serve on the Mission & Social Witness Committee for the Lake Erie Presbytery. I am hoping I could appeal to the churches in Pittsburgh for help. My daughter was flown by life-flight to Pittsburgh to give birth to my grandson. He was born May 12, 2008 at West Penn Hospital as a preemie weighing one pound, three ounces. With a many prayers and possibly a miracle, Trevor is still with us. He was in West Penn for five months and has been home for five months up until three weeks ago. He picked up one of those nasty viral infections and it went to his lungs. He was flown by life-flight to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He is still on the respirator and as of today a little better. My daughter Valerie and her husband Ryan Millimaci have been by his bedside as much as possible. What they are in need of is a short term apartment. They have been told that his recovery in the hospital is going to be months. We have been busy trying to find an affordable place ($800 or lower per month). The Ronald McDonald House is full most of the time. They have been staying at Rev. Ellie Johns apartment but the tenants below her do not want them there. We do not want Ellie to have to move because of us and her gracious generosity. I would appreciate any help you may be able to give or steer me in the direction that could help. Thank you! Have a wonderful day celebrating the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ! God's Blessings, Leslie Sickles (814)864-4809 (church/work) (814)868-0519 (home) (814)504-0353…

Inside there is a single desk and receptionist with nothing else available. The woman is very kind and politely asks what kind of services I am looking for. The services offered are based on need and appointments only; we are open regular business hours unless you are doing a group therapy session, which you can only attend if the therapist refers you. The types of services offered range from parenting services to anti bullying services. Their motto states, “At The Exchange Club Family Center there is help that restores the hopes and dreams of children and adults affected by child abuse, family violence, or traumatic family transitions. The Center offers programs to help both children and adults understand these behaviors and gain the support they need to cope with difficult family situations. Each of these programs improves life skills, helping children and adults learn to modify behaviors, improve self-esteem and deal with anger.” (Exchangeclub.net). All cultures in the Memphis area are served here, however, there are more Hispanic and African American clients served. Services can be billed to any kind of insurance including Medicaid and are also based on a sliding scale for specific services that insurance will not cover.…

I conducted an in person interview at Deaconess Cross Pointe, 7200 East Indiana Street; Evansville, Indiana 47715. I interviewed Natalie Goffinett, who has achieved her Master’s Degree in Social Work, and counsel’s children and families at that facility. When setting the appointment to interview Ms. Goffinett, I offered her the option to conduct the interview either in person or over the telephone. Ms. Goffinett and I agreed that an in person interview would be best if I wanted to have the opportunity to tour the facilities, as well as develop a sense for inpatient and outpatient environments. Deaconess Cross Pointe is a state licensed facility offering a full range of mental health services and psychiatric care which can meet the emotional and behavioral health care need of children, teen, adults, and their families. This facility meets, and exceeds my career goals and objectives; I would definitely consider working with this agency, as well as recommending others in need of the services that this facility provides.…

The Human Service field is vast with different approaches based on uniquely meeting individual’s needs. New Visions is a day shelter that is geared towards helping the homeless. The center provides a number of services to help those who really need it. The hours are from 8:30am- 3:30pm Monday thru Friday. The center is open on Saturdays only when a church group wants to feed. There is a Hygiene department where the clients can sign up for showers and to wash clothes. Clothing is only washed three days a week for clients. They usually run showers from 9am- 11:30am, but will let clients take showers later in an emergency. There is a clothing room where clients can get clean clothes if needed, before and after they take a shower. The clothing room is also open to the community and those who have to sometimes choose between clothes and food. New Visions has one of many food pantries in Camden City. They get many referrals from social services and community outreach centers.…

Australian governments have indicated that they do not consider it to be the governments responsibility to provide housing for all its citizens, seeing the provision of shelter as an individual responsibility. Despite this attitude they have endeavoured to assist the disadvantaged to varying degrees over the years through the establishment of the Department of Housing and through legislation. The Department of housing provides and manages public housing to enable those with a low or moderate income to obtain shelter. Government-funded personnel,…

In my exploration of different populations in the social work field, I interned at San Andreas Regional Center (SARC) in order to learn more about the population diagnosed with developmental disabilities. I received insight into the dynamics of caring for people with autism, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other conditions of the like and learned about the various ways such a population is disenfranchised and taken advantage of outside organizations that cater specifically to them.…

I believe that historians would benefit from the use of interviews when studying the living conditions of homeless individuals in our country. Even though homeless people may still possess the technology to be able to make their stories public through social media, they most likely do not possess the means for those stories to gain enough traction to raise the awareness needed for change to occur. Oral history appears to be beneficial to any group of people who are not in a socioeconomic position for their perspectives to be recognized without it. Conducting interviews is easier and more cost and time efficient than attempting to write novels on particular subjects.…

While reading the steps of writing my essay, I thought this is going to be easy. I only have to write about my work experience and how working in the Shelter System has changed my life point of view. Well, it is not that easy. It is a hard task to write a paper and being sincere with yourself and expect to impact others who are going to read my essay. I am not sure if any series of introductory words would accurately capture my passion and desire to get into the Master’s Program at Fordham University, therefore I decided to go straight into what motivated me to apply for the program by telling you a little bit about myself and what inspired me to follow the path in the helping profession.…
