a) Which population is considered the “sensitive population”?
The population of children under 15 and women of childbearing age is considered as “sensitive population”. It is the age group that is more at risk and sensitive to certain substances.
b) For the fish species, I chose in Upper Niagara River, which are Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Pumpkinseed, there was not a significant different between the consumption advisories between the general population and the sensitive population. For Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout, the consumption for both populations is similar. The consumption advisory for Brown Trout is around 4 per month. The consumption advisory for Rainbow Trout is from 12 to 1. However, for Pumpkinseed, the general population consumption advisor is 16 per month while the sensitive consumption advisory is 8 per month. The consumption advisory for the sensitive population is a slightly lower than it is for the general population. I think there is a difference …show more content…
Firstly, the contamination is what determines the consumptions. So the more contaminated there are inside a fish, the less it is recommended to consume. This is a key point because the fish consumption advisories are listing according to the contaminants within species of fish. Secondly, people used the resources in Lake Ontario and destroys the habitat. Such as using hydroelectricity, making the water warmer and hard for the eggs to respond. This messes up the natural pattern and consequences will happen. Thirdly, people cut trees, resulting in deforestation, all sorts of pollution. Chemicals enter the water may enter the fish as well. Some of them are harm, or may be toxic if it is very contaminated. Therefore the contamination raises. Overall, the factors of affecting the recommended consumption advisories in Lake Ontario is based on the water quality and
