School Board Meetings
The Corperation of National Community Service found this statistic that volunteering and being involved in the local government can give you 27% higher odds of finding a job rather than non-volunteers. When I finish High School I might have 27% higher odds of getting a job because I have met my civic responsibilities. I have met my civic responsibilities by going to school board meeting, babysitting for the parents of Parent Teacher Organization and working the PTO Fun Run, and I learned even the small things make a difference.
The importance of attending school board meetings are greatly neglected. Many people think that they don't have a say in what happens to the school or the board won't take into consideration what the people have

I was babysitting with three other high schoolers and I was told that there are normally more kids that attend but the night that I was helping there was only four kids. There was a dinner before and they had spaghetti and cookies along with milk or juice. It smelt really good but I had practice before so I was not able to attend the dinner. I did end up getting a cookie and that was really good. After the dinner when the meeting started we were able to go into a teachers room and play with the toys or stay in the gym and shoot hoops or run around. The little girls decided they wanted to go into the room and I was more than happy to go in there and play games. Girls are normally more my thing. Nathan came with and helped, we played hangman on the board and “house” that didn't last very long. One of the girls wanted to play “teacher” so she gave me and Nathan a spelling test and by that time it was time to go. I had a lot of fun playing with the little girls. I took one-two hours out of my night to help the parents of the kids so they could focus on the meeting and not worry about what their kids were doing in another room. When I was little my mom was in PTO and I still remember when high schoolers came to help and I hope they remember when they are my age. Knowing that I was making a difference made me want to realize the importance of helping the

I have never been to a school board meeting before, so I am not entirely sure what to expect. I know it is an open meeting, so I am sure there will be several parents of students in the district as well as citizens of area that will be affected by decisions made by the school board. In terms of the agenda, the board will undoubtedly discuss future school functions and the associated budgets, as well as personnel matters. This is a policy-making meeting so I do not expect there to be much input from the audience other than possible questions or concerns. Hopefully the board will address the agenda in an efficient and time effective manor and all disputes will be put to rest.…

This open discussion was lead by a Community School teacher with the purpose of establishing the legislative agenda for Town Meeting. The second day was for Town Meeting where motions would be voted upon officially. In Town Meetings, students developed a voting system that allowed competing proposals to explain and refine their ideas for the class. Class members would then physically move and sit with the member they supported giving immediate visual feedback regarding support during three rounds of discussion. If no proposal was passed, the community would continue to function under the previous rules.…

I would like to start this report off by saying that I have never been to city council meeting before, even though my father was the mayor, and still serves on city council back in my home town of Kingsford, Michigan. I found this experience both interesting and exhausting to see and understand the scope of the council’s role and responsibilities in keeping this city running. All members of council must have to have a very extensive education and background in finance and public administration even in mid-sized city like Colorado Springs. I couldn’t imagine the business required in a major metropolitan city.…

The city council meeting could have been interesting if it hadn't dragged on for so long. At first I wasn't sure of what was going on because I couldn't find where they were at on the agenda. I finally found my place when they were doing the announcements and presentations. This part of the meeting took the most time, but I guess it was the most important. They gave six different presentations. The first was a proclamation in recognition of Business Appreciation Week. Four people went up on stage to accept the proclamation and the Pres./ CEO gave a speech. Next was the presentation of a certificate in recognition for Costco Wholesale. The received the BRACE award for "Retail Business of the Year." Dr. Min-Lee Cheng then went up to accept a Proclamation in recognition of "Mosquito and Vector Control and West Nile Virus Awareness Week.…

By giving your time and showing compassion for the people in need you will help them to feel comfortable getting the assistance that is so necessary to their survival and health. Volunteering is a way to help that has the ability to give back. There are many great benefits to volunteer work, and not only by helping people in need. According to Shayla in Benefits of Volunteering in College, volunteering can also "build your network", "strengthen your resume", and of course give you the knowledge to better understand the people you are giving your time to (Shayla). Building your network will be a vital part of life when trying to find jobs, internships, and make business connections. People you meet through volunteering have the ability to forever affect your life and may well continue to be a part of your life for years to come. What better place to meet people who share the same drive to help others as you do than at an organization who helps feed Americans in need? These hours will not go unnoticed on your resume either. "Scholarship committees love to learn how youth are helping their communities." These hours will not only be valued by the people they help, as you spend time helping others your outlook on life is changed by the skills and real life experience you gain from it. While giving your time you will see that people who are in need are no different from…

Volunteers in the community – there are lots of opportunities that are available to volunteers in the community such as working in a charity and help making streets and city clean. Volunteering in a community can make a good citizen because people will work together and they will get along with each other. My parents were quite the doting type, as they had struggled with infertility issues for the better portion of their early years of marriage (as told by my mother). Therefore, my mother insisted being a “stay at home” Mom until after we each entered elementary school, since apparently no one else was good enough to raise her precious babies! Around the age of nine, I was enrolled in the Girl Scouts of America, and because of the many field trips and summer camping outings, I enjoyed the benefit of exposure to various experiences…

For my project I visited the Los Alamitos City council. The beginning of the meeting started with a call of order then proceeded to the roll call of the board members. After these steps had taken place the Pledge of Allegiance was said and the meeting began. As each speaker had their turn to speaker about their topic I noticed how democratic it was after a person had given their speech each of the board members voted on the issue and the matter was either passed or declines, it was very similar to direct democracy. Also each speaker was given five minutes which is plenty of time to get your ideas across to the board, and it’s just a long enough time so people don’t get sidetracked or bored. But the only problem that I can see with the five minute rule is if you have too many people speaking at a meeting, not everyone will have their chance to speak. While they’re I noticed that the size of the city council building was a little smaller than expected, because they were unable to sit all the people who attended causing a majority of people to stand in the back during the course of the meeting. There were many issues brought up during the meeting, one of the first issues dealt with the location of Verizon services through Los Alamitos, and the installing and construction that would happen if the city were to install Verizon services. Another important issue that was brought up was the increasing rise in water prices in los Alamitos, which any of the citizens at the meeting talked about and many proposals to the board. An finally one of the Last issues had to deal with trees uprooting sidewalks and roads throughout Los Alamitos that where cased by trees. Out of these three main topics the one that most surprised me was the cracked sidewalks and roads from trees. This most interested me because of the stimulus money that was put into fixing roads in the us has not helped out damaged and pot hole filled roads and sidewalks. These trees should be…

Yes, volunteering teaches you social skills and it looks good on a resume, but none of that stuff matters if you don’t have a good character. Your character is something that you can’t get rid of, but you can change. Volunteering can change you into a more patient, loving, and smart individual. In the past I’ve volunteered for the Carl Perkins Center, which deals with children who have been abused. Working with these children showed me how blessed I am. It made me more thankful, for my parents and family members. I made it my job to make those children happier than they were when I walked in. By the time I left I was the one who was more affected. Those children didn’t care about worldly things; all they wanted was your attention. This showed me that the gift of time is sometimes the best gift a person can…

What should be the “big picture” for Benton Community? Do we let the school administration and staff focus on educating the students and evaluating the building needs of the district, or do we want them continually defending their actions and decisions. Taking time from, or causing undue stress to our educators’ educational efforts during these challenging economic times, is detrimental to the over-all plan at Benton Community Schools.…

Last year, I went to Pinetree Preschool, where there is nothing but young children. That was an experience I enjoyed and found so valuable and opened my eyes to the potential and possibilities of children. This year, I chose the complete opposite of Pinetree and I volunteered at Primrose, a retirement home for people who suffer from alzheimer's or dementia. At Primrose, I saw a completely different side of human life. That may seem like an exaggeration but I tend not to spend much time with people much, much older than me, as they were at Primrose. I learned an incredible amount of patience and understanding and just life in general during my time volunteering at Primrose, that I could not had received anywhere else.…

Admittedly, kids and teens are harder to influence when it comes to volunteering with a charitable act, so teachers turn to bonus points, ect., rather than explaining to them the purpose and how it could really help out someone. A few years ago, my mom decided to take me with her to offer cinnamon rolls to the elderly at the nursing home. At first, the idea seemed atrocious to me. I thought, wow, I'm going to spend my free time doing this? After disputing with my mom about it for half an hour, she finally explained to me that I would really make a difference to every person's life that I meet there. Afterwards, I really felt good about myself and realized that the gift of giving is a reward itself.…

Students who acquire jobs closely related to their majors will most likely benefit from the experience of volunteer work. On one hand, it enhances their further understanding of subjects that they have been taught at university; on the other hand, it provides an opportunity to gain working experience at the organization where they were assigned to volunteer. Furthermore, to provide service to communities or help disabled person to live better, encourage volunteers to be socially responsible people, which increase their competitive advantage and employability.…
