The first day of the first month by the Chinese Lunar Calendar is Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year; it is the most important traditional holiday in China. Spring Festival dates back to four thousand years ago, originated in the Shang Dynasty. The year of 2011 was the Year of the Rabbit; due to my parents went to Bengal for missionary work, my uncle who lives in the countryside invited me to his house for Spring Festival this year. I didn’t like the idea at first because the countryside is known for its unsatisfying sanitary condition and the lack of air-conditioning. Contrary to my expectations, this Spring Festival was the most fun and memorable holiday I’ve ever experienced.…

It's flower season at the City of Pines -- perfect timing for an all-out fiesta in the streets. The Baguio folks take a break on these days to revel in the cool climate and the unique culture of their city. Multi-hued costumes are worn, mimicking the various blooms of the highland region (or any of its 11 ethnic tribes). There's also the half-dozen or so flower beds-- disguised, of course, as the Panagbenga parade floats.…

It has been recognized by the National Government that an efficient transport system together with an integrated and comprehensive road network are key essential drivers to spur economic growth and activity. This is particularly true for a developing country such as the Philippines, where 90% of all passenger movements and half of freight movement are handled by our road network system [NEDA-MTPDP 2004-2010]. However, this thrust is an undertaking that the government has realized it cannot execute on its own. As such, one of government’s key strategy in the past and continues to be an integral part of the plan to develop infrastructure in the country is the involvement of the private sector, initially under the “Built-Operate-Transfer (BOT)” framework and now known as “Public-Private Partnerships (PPP)”.…

The Sinulog festival is one of the grandest and most colorful festivals in the Philippines with a very rich history. The main festival is held each year on the third Sunday of January in Cebu City to honor the Santo Niño, or the child Jesus, who used to be the patron saint of the whole province of Cebu (since in the Catholic faith Jesus is not a saint, but God). It is essentially a dance ritual which remembers the Filipino people's pagan past and their acceptance of Christianity.…
