Spring Festival
Spring Festival The first day of the first month by the Chinese Lunar Calendar is Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year; it is the most important traditional holiday in China. Spring Festival dates back to four thousand years ago, originated in the Shang Dynasty. The year of 2011 was the Year of the Rabbit; due to my parents went to Bengal for missionary work, my uncle who lives in the countryside invited me to his house for Spring Festival this year. I didn’t like the idea at first because the countryside is known for its unsatisfying sanitary condition and the lack of air-conditioning. Contrary to my expectations, this Spring Festival was the most fun and memorable holiday I’ve ever experienced. During the fifteen days of Spring Festival I experienced many old traditions and customs; the activities were meaningful and had interesting stories behind them. January the 23rd was the coldest day before Spring Festival; however, my uncle, aunt, my cousin and I went to the market and bought special purchases for the Spring Festival despite of the awful weather. Among the goods we bought, the antithetical couplets are worth a mention; antithetical couplets are vertical written couplets of blessing words written with writing brush on red papers and placed along both sides of a doorway. Red is considered lucky color in China, and most stores were decorated in red during the holiday season. We saw many huge lanterns with the character “福” (means happiness and good fortune, pronounces as “fu”) printed on their surfaces were hung on the walls. There was a big country fair which sells festival goods such as nuts, seafood, decorations, and fire crackers. The people on the streets looked vivid and full of joy, cries of sellers in the streets can be heard and shoppers carrying all kinds of goods can be seen everywhere. My aunt and I were pushed in the people mountain people sea, my face was red because of the cold weather, but I didn’t mind because I was busy

    Ha Jin – The Bridegroom

Described as utopian in nature, the Chinese culture is often in pursuit for the perfect individual, a harmonious and structured society where the citizens as a whole create the ideal culture. In a collection of short stories entitled The Bridegroom, author Ha Jin documents this aspect of reality in homeland China. Primarily for the purposes of instruction and satirical verse, Ha Jin, shows how people are trying to find themselves in a society that focuses on the ‘whole’ of the country rather than the individual. He is able to interconnect this theme of individualism through four major stories in the book while presenting ‘Chineseness’ or satire of fictional verse as a way to focus on the changes throughout China and the political discourse that its citizens face.…

Today The Rite of Spring is regarded as a revolutionary piece of music and choreograph. Its choreographer, Vaslav Nijinsky, was born in 1889. He started his dance career after he joined the Imperial Ballet School in 1900, in which he studied under Enrico Cecchetti and Nicholas Legat. He took many lead roles until his dance career took a turning point, and met Sergei Diaghilev. He danced with famous Anna Pavlova, as a lead in the Ballets Russes in Paris, and also starred in Fokine's pieces "Le Pavillon d'Armide," "Cleopatra," and "The Feast." He then went on to choreograph his own ballets, such as "L’Aprés-Midi d'un Faune" (The Afternoon of a Faun) and "The Rite of Spring" ("Russian Ballet History"). Most of Nijinsky's works were created far before the time they could be appreciated. The Rite of Spring, however, led to modern dance. The music in this dance was composed by Igor Stravinsky, which also played a revolutionary role in modern dance (Anderson).…

For my event I attended the Black Swamp Arts Festival back in September. This festival was over a whole weekend and it was filled with eclectic styles of art and music. Walking through the festival and seeing the different booths made me feel like I was in a whole new world sometimes. The art was gorgeous, some of it was funny and amusing, and others were moving and were very deep. The musical portion of the weekend is where I found my most memorable events that I believe related to this class in particular. I saw two very different musical performances, one was the modern jazz pair called GINKGOA, and the second was the female mariachi band called MARIACHI FLOR DE TOLOACHE. Both were culturally diverse performances both within the group and…
