Response to literature: AN INSPECTOR CALLS

John Boynton Priestly was born in Britain in 1894. He worked as a novelist and playwright, but he was also a political activist. Most of his plays, just like ‘An inspector calls’, have a very significant political content in which capitalism is criticized. He was interested in the idea of socialism, which defends a system without great differences between social casses. His greatest concerns were equality and fairness, and there are many references to these in ‘An inspector calls’. He wrote the play in 1945, when World War II was ending, in a time of extreme fear and dread; and the first production took place in in 1946. The right words to describe him would be stern and direct, right from the first moment. He does not let anyone, especially Birling, to go over him and intimidate him and sets the limits right from the start. He does not answer the familie’s questions when he believes it is not opportune: ‘one line of inquiry at a time’. When Birling accuses him of being impolite, he refuses to apologize as he really is just doing his job. He symbolises socialism, in contrast to Birling who clearly represents capitalism. Inspector Goole is the most important character, he obtains all the information from the family in a very intelligent way: he acted as if he was not aware of many details he did really know. This way, in his solemn and grave manner, he knows when a member of the family is hiding part of the truth. His immense authority makes everyone obey him, even Mr and Mrs Birling who spend most of the play argue with him. His dignified attitude and telling things how they really are make him really respectable, and quite the opposite to Arthur
