Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the change in holiday behaviour, motivations and patterns of different generations. It examines the holiday planning and the holiday experience of tourists visiting specific destinations through the administration of three interviews to people from different generations. A literature review is presented so that it was acknowledged all the research done on the topic under study until now. The findings revealed that there is a definite different approach to travelling when regarding the diverse generations. However the most striking point of the study is that most respondents were found to have similar motivations for travelling, meaning that the respondents seek relaxation, happiness, enthusiasm and novelty when going on holiday. The study enables the segmentation of feasible new markets in the tourism industry, through designing conclusions in regards to intergenerational issues.

Literature Review

This literature reviews aims at discussing the existing knowledge on the travel behaviour of different generations. It consists of different topics as well as a few criticisms on which information is still lacking in this area. This literature review will focus on the travel trends and patterns of different generations. These travel patterns are of great importance to marketeers as they may represent an opportunity for developing new markets for existing destinations (Huh & Park, 2010). Moreover, it is shown that different generations have a different approach and use of Internet when regarding travels (Beldona, 2009). Finally, some criticisms are pointed out according to additional comments made by the several authors mentioned below. These criticisms, most importantly, determine the opportunity gaps in the studies of this particular tourism research topic.

Travel Frequency/Intensity Martin Oppermann suggests that younger generations travel more frequently, for longer periods of time and to farther destinations than older generations. It results in increase experience and varied expectations (Oppermann, 1995). Due to these different travel patterns, younger generations are not likely to travel to the same destinations, as they get older. Moreover, their expectations have also risen since the moment they began to travel (Oppermann, 1995). Becker & Lawson also show that there is an increase in overseas travel during teenage years until 30s. As from 30s till 80s the distance that people are willing to travel is much smaller. There is a small decrease in travel in the ages 34 and 48 in regards to overseas travel and Oppermann suggests that this is because of children being born which instantly makes travelling...
