Proffey: A Short Story
ustralia, never had a chance to tell him of our plans. Proffey, as I used to call my friend Benjamin “Bebito” Balbuena, often talked about premonition, and on that occasion, he stood in front of our Class of ´84, looking distant, as if he could see into the future. Peta Jurcevic and I were as bewildered as the rest of our high school friends who were paying little attention to him. On the way out I told her something that I will regret for the rest of my life: “If I could, I would kill him right now!” Not long after Proffey and I left the venue together, he was shot dead in a quiet roadside café in the wee hours of

The first discovery made was in Chicago on June 6, 2000 when sanitation workers found three dead dog bodies in trash cans outside of Craig Boyd’s house (ALDF, 2009). This should have been a red flag to alert authorities, but nothing happened. A week later June 13, the same sanitation workers discovered two more dead dogs outside of Boyd’s home (ALDF, 2009). Neighbors complained of an awful smell from dead dogs in Boyd’s hot basement (ALDF, 2009). The Animal Abuse Control Team of Chicago’s police department raided Boyd’s house finding the basement was set up for dogfight training (ALDF, 2009). Six dogs and one puppy were…

Killing animals, like neighbors cats, was a recurring happening. By the time Kuklinski was a ‘Young man’ (anywhere between 14 and 18) he had committed his first murder. It was a neighborhood bully, who had been picking on Kuklinski for some time. Kuklinski ended up beating the boy to death with a metal bar that was used to hang coats on. During an interview he had this to say about his motive, “When I was a young man I found out that if you hurt somebody they’ll leave you alone. Good guys do finish last. When I tried to leave everybody alone and do my own thing, everybody just wanted to hurt me. Until one day i just decided “Well I’ve had enough of this picking.”’ After that, Kuklinski proceed to fight back with the metal bar. Eventually Kuklinski ended up, without intention, killing the boy. Kuklinski, feeling scared and worried about what he had done, did not kill again for sometime. The next time Kuklinski would would be in a bar fight when he was 18. Kuklinski described the scene, “We got into an argument, a fight. I hit him with a questick… a few too many times, and he died.” After, an interviewer asked Kuklinski how he felt after he had heard the man had died. Kuklinski responded “I felt very bad, very, very bad. I was upset. I didn’t mean to do it actually. But surprisingly I felt sadness, and after awhile I felt something else, I didn’t feel sad. I was sad along with some sort of…

Once the investigators had finished eating up the lamb leg they continued to search her house for any other clues. They searched every single room of the house. Three hours later they started gathering their materials. “Well Mrs. Maloney it doesn’t looked like we have came to a conclusion on exactly what happened to your husband.” One of the police officers told her. “Oh, but you will still continue to search for answers right?” Mrs. Maloney questioned him. “It doesn’t look like we have come to much luck in this investigation. Goodnight now.” The police officer replied. The investigators and the police officer were now heading out of the house and getting into their cars and going away. Mrs. Maloney walked closed the front door and walked back into the living room. “Gosh, I don’t know what I would have done if I was caught.” Mrs. Maloney thought to…

The biggest takeaway that I had from Ben Ferencz's biography was not of his career, but at how quickly he got into it. I am most impressed that he was able to graduate Harvard Law at the age of 23. This is an accomplishment that I think is impressive because the average entering age is 24 years old. That means that Ferencz was much ahead of his class, and it shows.…

Workers also ripped the animals' beaks off, twisted their heads off, spat tobacco into their eyes and mouths, spray-painted their faces, and squeezed their bodies so hard that the birds expelled feces—all while…
