Program of Study and Professional Development Plan

Walden University
NURS 6000-8, Success Strategies in the Masters of Science Program in Nursing
March 4, 2012

Program of Study and Professional Plan The purpose of this assignment is to develop my own personal plan to meet my educational goals at Walden University. It also allows me to begin a dialog with my instructor about my interests and goals and to give a background of my educational and professional experience.
Personal and Professional Goals My name is Sherri Teare and I have been in nursing for 26 years. I am a mother of two adult children and have been married to my high school sweetheart for 28 years. With the empty nest syndrome in full swing, I have decided that now is the time for me to embark on my dream to continue my education. I have always joked that I could be a professional student. I love to learn and I love being a student. My ultimate goal is to get my master’s degree in nursing at Walden University. With a degree in nursing informatics I can make a positive impact on the way we practice nursing. I can do this by improving communication between providers and patients and improving continuity of care.
Educational Background and Research Proficiency I began my nursing career as a licensed practical nurse soon after high school. I always knew that I wanted to become a nurse but I also needed to earn an income as soon as possible. Having a career after one year in school was something that I could handle personally and financially at the time. While in the L.P.N. program I had the opportunity to work in a local hospital as a student nurse. After graduation I took a position within the same hospital and worked there for the next 7 years. I had the opportunity to work on several units during that time, including medical/surgical, cardiac, orthopedics, mother/baby and finally the psychiatric unit. It was there that I found my niche. During that time I got

I did not understand the value and the importance of education until I migrated to America. Coming to America, not only did I get culture shock, but I realized that I could not survive in this country without education. However, to raise my children, I would not rely on the government. I had to start from the beginning by learning ABCs, words, and grammar. This was very difficult to do because I already had my Master’s in Mathematics from my native country. I received my Associate of Science in Mathematics in June 2002 at Los Angeles City College. I continued my education and received my Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in June 2006 at Cal State University. It took me years and years finally get to where I am today. I made countless sacrifices, but it has been one of the most gratifying and important decisions I had made in my whole life. Now I am pursuing my education to get DBA at Walden University.…

I knew I wanted to be a nurse from the time I started college, and it did not take long working in the field to determine that I was meant for health care management. My BSN and management ability has enabled me to work my way up to a senior management position, as the Chief Nursing Officer, at a rural hospital. I believe that by obtaining the MSN/MHA dual degree, doors will continue to open in health care administration. For this reason, I have found my way back to school and I am a proud virtual student at University of Phoenix (UOPX). Through my life journey, I have worked hard to manage my demanding career while helping my wife raise a family and set a good example for our children. While I am traveling the path to my graduate degree, my goal is to succeed in making good grades and continue to manage my family and my career. In the long-term, I hope my decision to improve myself will reflect upon my children, and they will understand the importance of an education. Professionally, my goals include continuing…

My first job after graduation I worked as a bedside nurse on an Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation floor in the hospital setting. As a rehabilitation staff nurse, I provided direct care and education on self-care including safe medication administration, sleep, nutrition, safety, bowel and bladder care. I helped perform activities that served to maintain and restore function and prevent complications. I feel lucky to have had this opportunity as my first nursing role because of the team-based care coordination and the value based on each member of the interdisciplinary team. As I transitioned from a novice nurse to a more competent nurse, I gained perspective from planning my own actions based on critical thinking and organization. It was during this time that I began to think of long-term goals pertaining to my nursing career.…

I became very serious about pursuing a nursing career my junior year in high school. When I was offered the opportunity to shadow a recovery room nurse and a nurse anesthetist, I jumped right on it. I was able to go from witnessing a surgery in the operating room to observing the beginning steps of their journey to recovery in the recovery room. There was never a dull moment throughout the day. The nurses constantly had new patients to treat or help, and it was a very exciting experience that I will never forget. My mind was set from that point forward. For me, I hope nursing is thought of not only as a job or career, but also as an adventure as I grow from the many new life experiences that will be thrown my way. I hold great pride in saying "I will be a…
