Professional Development Plan
AED 201 Teaching as a Profession
August , 2010
The goals I have set for myself for the next five years are to becoming a successful, dependable, and productive teacher. The road to for filling this goal will have many adversities such as long hours of instruction from a six years degree program from University of Phoenix. I will have to dedicate my efforts and time in to achieve this process of obtaining my degrees. The way to achieve these goals it to develop good study habits, read material pertain to education, research information, and also be committed to the process. I will also find a program that I can be an assistance in the school system in order reinforce the skills I will be learn. Then after completing my degree I then will determine the state I want to be teaching in and obtain the licensure for that state. Next are the following steps I will be undertaking to achieve my goals over the next five years. Within these next five year I will be face with many obstacles that will come my way that I will have to overcome, and learn not to be discouraged by them. Some of the obstacles that I’ll face will be time management skills, professional development skills, and planning my lessons. My personal and educational goal is to have my associates, bachelor’s degree in Elementary education from the Axia College University of Phoenix. Then either continue for my master’s with University of Phoenix or transfer to a state university. My plans are to teach primarily the middle school grades or high school in the state I currently live in. I do not want to be just a teacher to my student’s; I want them to be able to say that Ms. Brannstrom was not only my teacher, but a teacher who cares about her students. Plus she motivated and encouraged me to do my very best to be a success in the future plus give the skills to achieve my dreams.
I must first continue working on my education at the University of Phoenix in order for me to achieve this goal. This first step consists of taking all the necessary basic classes to help me understand the basics of becoming a teacher. In the State of Texas, there are very strict guidelines you need to follow in order to obtain a teachers licensure. First obtain an associates and “bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. “ Second complete a teacher’s “training through an approved program” that is “provided by colleges, universities, school districts, regional service center, and other entities.” Third I “must successfully complete the appropriate teacher certification for the subject and grade level I wish to teach.” After obtaining the “Texas classroom teaching certificate and a bachelor’s degree” I then can add an additional classroom certificate if I want to go into (e.g. School Counselor, Principal, Superintendent, Learning Resources/School Librarian, and Educational Diagnostician). Lastly I will be required to summit all required paper work needed for licensure. This includes a licensure application, an official transcript, letter from the university that I received my degree from them with the approved credit hours and a criminal back ground check. These are all the steps needed for me to receive my licensure to teach in the State of Texas.
The area that I will need improvement from the “Interstate New Teachers Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC)” would be principle number seven. Principle seven basically states that “teacher plans instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, the community, and curriculum goals.” Principle seven planning for instruction is an extremely important function of becoming an excellent teacher so students excel in there learning. As, an effective teacher I will have complete control over my classroom and how I will present the lesson to the students. I want to be able to present the lesson in a fun and effective way for the student to learn and...
