Ponyboy, Darry, and Dally are all heroes. A hero is someone who is brave and sacrifices their lives for others.

Ponyboy is a hero because he did what no normal kid would do. “I’ll get them, don’t worry! I started a dead run for the church. "What in the world are you doing?" Two-Bit's voice broke into my thoughts.
I looked up at him. "Picking up the glass."
He stared at me for a second, then grinned. "You little sonofagun," he said in a relieved voice. I didn't know what he was talking about, so I just went on picking up the glass from the bottle end and put it in a trash can. I didn't want anyone to get a flat tire.”

Darry is a hero because he cares for his siblings. "Oh, Pony, I thought we'd lost you... like we did Mom and

Horse showing is not an easy task. It is hours upon hours of going in circles and patterns around the arena. You have to know all the right patters and ques as well as having everything spot on and perfect. It is perfect chaos. I smiled to myself at how perfect this show was going. I’ve only been showing for 2 years and so far I’ve gotten $10, 1 ribbon, and a good job from my trainer. If you were me, you would understand how exciting it was. My trainer, Dominique, is also the real owner of my horse and my same age best friend. I had never won anything at a horse show before. More than anything I got mad because I could never get Drifter to listen or did something wrong. So, yeah, It was a pretty special night. However, sitting here…

On a beautiful day in 2013 my horse had a horrible accident. The horses were in the middle pasture grazing when I left for school. It happened to be that this day my mom went to work at the NRCS that August day, and parts were needed on the ranch, therefore my dad left for Pierre a little bit later that morning. When I walked out of school, and sat in the pickup, my mom and I went to the Cenex, and exclaimed to me that my dad is coming with my horse, he is cut. We took him to the vet out in rapid, and I hoped he would be okay.…

It seems that every little girl goes through an “I love horses” stage, but they grow out of it over time. For me, I never grew out of it. As a child, my dream was to have my own pony. At the age of 17, I am fortunate to own three horses. Horseback riding is an intense sport because it takes more than athleticism. Horseback riding takes commitment, determination, most importantly, constructing a bond with your horse. It’s a team sport, a team of two. I cannot think of any one thing that could replace the amount of knowledge I have gained from having horses.…

I opened my eyes to a dismal scene. Shadows of a thousand trees reached towards me, their thin fingers stretching out into the gloom. It took but a moment to recollect how I had come to be in my present situation. That confounded horse–always a nervous one–had sensed something moving through the underbrush, become incredibly agitated, and eventually taken off at full speed, leaving me helpless upon its back until I was left with no option but to dive off. Unfortunately, I had miscalculated the velocity of my steed’s wild pace and struck a tree at full speed, rendering me unconscious. How much time had passed between then and now, I knew not, only that the darkness was becoming thicker with every passing minute. Finding the group I had…

Standing in the arena next to this tall animal that could crush me scared me but also made me excited. The horse turns his head and softly nickers to me. I slowly lift my hand out to pet his enormous head. He takes a couple of steps towards me and I squeal a little and jump back afraid that he will crush me. He stops just an inch from me and nudges my hand searching for any smell of a treat. I laugh and turn to my teacher. She comes up to me and says “Ok, I’m going to give you a leg up so that you can get your foot into the stir-up.” I nod and step onto the crate that’s in front of me then I put my foot in to the cradle she made with her hands and all of a sudden I’m on that tall horse.…

I was laboring up the Sierra Buttes trail, my pace devouring the miles, when I first met Elenor. I’ve been hiking the trail every Labor Day weekend with my family, for over 7 years; I know how challenging the trail is, I’ve seen a number of hikers turn back without even making it half way. I was astounded when I happened upon Elenor inching her way up the trail. I thought there was no way she could make it to the top, she’s simply too old. Elenor proved me to be incredibly wrong, to never assume something isn’t possible because conventional wisdom says so. Watching Elenor trudge up the trail and overcome what I thought would be impossible obstacles was an inspiring moment in my life.…

To me Easter Sunday has always been a very important holiday. My whole family always gets together to celebrate it. We always go to the Ranch, and have lots of activities, and many kinds of delicious food. In the spring of 2010 I was expecting my first baby. It was a great feeling, but it turned out that his due date was on Holy Friday , just two days before Easter Sunday. I had been feeling great during my hole pregnancy, so when I had my 39th week visit to the Doctor, and he asked me if I wanted to induce labor or wait for another week, I didn't hesitate to chose to wait. Why? Because I didn't want to miss Easter.…

Every child grows up wanting something that they feel they can’t live without. No matter what that something is, it motivates the child to do whatever they have to do to get it. As a child, I have always been the type to take care of and keep every pair of shoes I get. The love I had for shoes was unexplainable and I often tended to go nuts if someone had worn them without asking. Still to this day I’m crazy about them and I have accepted the fact that I am a shoe fanatic. Every time I go shopping it’s a must I pick up a pair of shoes. When I was 13, I remember being mad at my mother because we went shopping but she wouldn’t buy me a pair of shoes. I remember it all like yesterday.…

One of my most frightening experiences happened when I was about thirteen years old. This happened while I was visiting with my grandma on the north side. The area where the incident happened was commonly known as the “Hood” where bad things happened to good people and worse things happen to bad people. My uncles and cousins were outside playing around and just having fun. Out of nowhere there was a continuous barrage of gun fire that seemed as if it wouldn’t stop. The target of the gun fire was my grandma’s next door neighbor. The neighbor was chased to his house by two men and shot a number of times even while he was running. When the gun fire started we made a hasty retreat to the house where we barricaded ourselves inside while staying away from the windows. After it was all over we could hear the sound of the police sirens coming in the distance. It was at this time we decided it would be safe to venture outside.…
