In the Outsiders, by S.E Hinton, Ponyboy shows that he doesn’t want his hair cut. He says that “It was my pride” and shows clear dislike to the idea of cutting his hair. The reason he is like that is that greasers are known for their hair, and it makes them feel like they belong. Ponyboy’s is very special to him and says that it makes him look “tuff.” When his hair is cut and bleached, he looks in the mirror and sees what he looks like. He was a Greaser but has been frightened by the Socs. He has been stereotyped as a juvenile delinquent by and has always been made fun of. Ever since Ponyboy has been brought into this gang life he fails to see the good side in any Soc and is to stick together with the Greasers believing that each one of them lives up to their name as being the jet set rich kids. However, there is one input from a Soc that makes Ponyboy realize that the Socs and Greasers both go through the same struggles, Cherry. She opened up Pony’s eyes to believe that there is only one difference between the Socs and Greasers. “You Greaser have a different set of values. You’re more emotional. We’re more sophisticated--cool to the point of not feeling anything. First things first, I do not smoke! I do not understand why Ponyboy smokes, it is bad for you, and he is an underage smoker. Ponyboy smokes at the age of 14 when you are suppose to be smoking at the age of 21, which there is a big jump of years right there. Secondly, Ponyboy’s parents died in a car accident sadly. His parents died 8 months before The Outsiders started. Fortunately, my parents are not dead, and I am extremely sad for Ponyboy because I could not imagine going through childhood without my Mom or Dad.
