During the colonization of the Philippines, the Filipinos lost their freedom. They were being abused by the Spaniards.
These are the settings in the Spaniards colonization:
The Filipinos are required to pay a TRIBUTO or TRIBUTE (TAX).

FORCED LABOR is established under the Spaniards government. It is where the male Filipinos 16-60 of age were required to work for the government for 40 days in one year.

They were assigned to build or repair roads and bridges
Sometimes, they would be assigned to work on a shipyards or foundries or to cut timber in the forest.
They were also used as soldiers or sailors.

The law required that the worker should be given a nominal salary and to have a free rice rations, but then the officials of the Spaniards government were corrupt and ignored the law.

They pocketed the salaries and the rice rations were distributed to them.

Another burden imposed on Filipinos was the BANDALA.

It is a compulsory sale by the Filipino farmers of their farm products to the Spaniards.
This system was being abused also by the Spaniards, their goods were undervalued and in many cases their products were not even paid for.

The Spaniards introduced Western or European system of education wherein the principal aim of the education in the Philippines during Spanish regime was to make the Filipinos obedient to them and to be a god fearing Christians.

Spaniards established many other systems which are only for their own good. The Filipinos became slaves for a long time. They abused the Filipinos. They were also being maltreated by the Spaniards. Others are being killed. By the help of our great men and some Americans, the Philippines became free from the hands of the Spanish. And this is the end of the Spanish regime.

The United States had a different approach in colonizing the Philippines. The Americans considered educating the Filipinos as one of their top priorities in The Philippines. They treated the Filipinos like their friends.
These are the settings in the American colonization:
The Americans built schools in the City.

Because the Filipinos were hungry for education, they flocked to public and private schools in large numbers.

They teach English language to the Filipinos. (The American soldiers were the first teachers of the Filipinos.)

They established the Philippine public school system.

It provided for free primary education and the establishment of a school to train Filipino teachers.

They gave the bright young Filipino students an opportunity to take up higher education in American universities and colleges.

They introduced Protestantism (It did not gain wide acceptance maybe because Filipinos were deeply believed in Catholicism).

They also established Aglipayan Church (Independent Church).

The economic development of the Philippines progressed.

But then some lands are being irrigated. The trees were being cut and the land is being built by buildings and establishments.

They established free trade system which is the TARRIFF ACT.

The Philippine products could enter the U.S. without paying any duties or taxes.

They made several improvements in the city such as the bridges, buildings, roads and many more.

They also introduces machineries, vehicles or transportation facilities and also for communication.

They promoted social well being of the Filipinos.

They promoted the public health and sanitation to the Filipinos.

They sent private American organizations to give aide to the victims of natural calamities.

They also established charitable institutions to help the disabled people and who are less fortunate.

It is to the everlasting credit and honor to the Americans that unlike the other colonial powers, they did not abused or exploited its colonial possession. Instead, they did their best to improve the life of the Filipino people. They educated the Filipinos. They treated the Filipinos well and give us the freedom we are longing for.

To win the Filipino loyalty, the Japanese tried to change or erase the traces of the American influence in the Philippines. They also tried to make friends with the Filipinos.
These are the settings in the Japanese colonization:
They ordered the changing of the American names of the streets, towns, buildings to either Filipino or Japanese names.

The Japanese launched an intensive propaganda campaign to win the loyalty and support of the Filipinos.

They extolled the virtues of Japan and its culture.

They pictured themselves as the true friends of the Filipinos while the Americans were their enemies.

They made the Japanese language (Nippongo) as a compulsory subject in all school.

The Japanese did not get the loyalty of the Filipinos that’s why the Japanese treated the Filipino harshly.

They alienated the Filipinos.
The life of the Filipinos became difficult on the hands of the Japanese.
They issued several rules which they enforced with harshness.
Violations meant by slapping from the Japanese soldiers, arrest, torture and worse is death.
They took from Filipinos whatever they wanted.
Many Filipino women were forcibly made into “comfort women” to serve the sexual needs of the Japanese soldiers.

Food shortage happened because the farmers are forced to abandon their farm or land to escape from the Japanese brutality.

The Japanese occupation in the Philippines created a trauma to the Filipinos. The way they maltreated the Filipinos, some others were killed and women are being abused sexually by the Japanese. The Japanese occupation only last for almost 3 years, by the help of Gen. Douglas Mc Arthur-an American general, the Japanese forcedly leave the Philippines.

During the 1800s, industries were growing rapidly, and there wasn’t much land left in the United States to conquer, so the United States began looking beyond its borders for new places to control. As a result, on February 6th, 1899, after learning that the Treaty of Paris was ratified, the United States annexed the Philippines. At this moment, the arguments for annexing the Philippines were that they were unfit for self-government and that if the United States hadn’t annexed, somebody else would have, while the arguments against were that it was a massive betrayal to the Filipinos, as well as the United States’s own values and the massive bloodshed that would result. A reason for annexing the Philippines was that they were simply unfit for self-government. In an…

Imagine fighting for freedom against a country that won’t listen to you and treats you with cruelty. You don’t have much military power, so this other, more powerful country helps you gain independance. However, as soon as you win, the country that helps turns around and puts you in the same situation, just with them instead of the original country. This is what it was like in the Philippines! Before the Spanish-American war, the Philippines were a territory of Spain, along with some other countries like Cuba and Puerto Rico. Spain mistreated the people of these territories. They moved them into camps, that had shelters with no roofs. If they didn’t get there in time, they were executed. The United States stepped in and went to war with Spain for the independance of these territories. When we won the war, we got control of these…

The freedom for the Philippines came from the blood shed on the battlefield between the Spanish and American armies. It all started in the year of 1898. The rights of Filipinos were violated during the Philippine-American war because America thought it was their “responsibility” to govern the Filipinos and be a nobler destiny. America took up the white man’s burden when it came to the Philippines. Instead of America allowing the Philippines to declare their independence the Filipinos go into another revolutionary war over their independence. Imperialists were the Americans backing up the war and egging it on. Imperialism is the desire to acquire influence or ownership of areas outside the United States, for the increase in military, economic, and commercial wealth. The annexation of the Philippines brought better trade routes to China and opened up more opportunities for America. One imperialist, President William McKinley, had these reasons to annex the Philippines: 1) We could not give them back to Spain, that would be cowardly; 2) We could not turn them over to our rivals, that would be bad business; 3) We could not hand them to themselves- they are unfit for self-government; and 4) There was nothing left to do but take them all and to educate, civilize, and Christianize them. 1…

It was on the 15th century when Spain started to colonize the Philippines with its aim may be summarized in a formula known as “3 Gs”- Gospel, Gold, and Glory or “3 Ms”- Missionaries, Merchant, and Military. Conversion of natives to Christianity and making known of “supernatural” benefits of true faith appeared to be the very motive of the said colonization. However, more than to pervade the gospel, the desire for gold, wealth, glory and power were Spain’s hidden mission in invading the land. Philippines was under Spain’s colony for exactly 333 years which is from 15th century to 18th. For a long period, a lot of changes and anomalies took place the country due to its manipulation.…

Nationalism is the emotion we get every time we think for our country. During the period of Spanish colonialism, there was no national feeling among Filipinos. Nationalism did not exist in the Philippines. The ideas of nationalism were filtered only through the Philippines in the nineteenth century. The Filipinos before were all under control of the Spaniards and the Spaniards made sure that the Filipinos would never have the hope to be free. Those people called “Filipinos” were Spaniards born in the Philippines and the indigenes were derogatorily were called “Indios”. The Indios were not united by words and deeds for that time the archipelago has different forms of language and there is no lingua franca. The revolts were not compact and are rather sporadic, thus resulting from their defeat against Spaniards. They also used primitive form of strategies in war and weaponry. Spanish rule in those times which our country was colonized was indeed abusive. Many of its colonies were abused by taking their lands, natural resources and its wealth. The Spanish policies were made for the benefit of the colonizers rather than for the betterment of the Filipinos. It was all for the benefit of the Spaniards in such a way that even friars and the church had its way of influencing the government. Spanish rule maybe seen and felt all over the place back then when the guardia civil was all around with their guns unto them that really scared the people on those times. The greed of the friars upon land and wealth was also a huge factor for the Filipinos to be anguish with their government. Filipinos during those times were treated as if they were the unaccepted in their own country. Those who were rich and powerful were the only ones at least treated fairly. The church like what the accounts say was abusive. Friars exploited in terms of overpricing tax collection. It was one of the reasons for why…

When the Spanish took control and colonized the Philippines beginning in 1571, many revolts and uprisings took place during that time. The main objectives that the Spanish had in taking over the Philippines were to convert the Filipinos to Christianity and to colonize the country for their own benefits. It wasn’t until three centuries later that the people of the Philippines realized they needed to form a massive revolt against the Spaniards. In this final attempt as the Filipinos all were once again reunited they were able to gain back their independence and land.…

    Miseducation of Filipino

Personally, I learned and realized many things about the history and relationship between the Americans and the Filipinos upon reading this paper. It is quite intriguing what the main reasons really were the Americans in taking power over the Philippines. Was it for the good of the Filipinos or the Americans’ good? Whatever it was, they succeeded in almost every aspect of conquering the land because they knew the most effective way to subjugate Filipinos minds: by controlling our education. They created a new generation of good colonials, the “unFilipino” Filipinos. The indigenous ways of life of Filipinos had been changed to the American way of life. That was ridiculous because certainly, America and Philippines vastly differed from each other in so many ways, and therefore, their ways of life based on their differing needs should be entirely different. But the Americans insisted on creating a “carbon-copy” of themselves in Filipinos through the imposition of their language in their…
