President Obama’s comments are expected, necessary, and typical of a posttraumatic event happening somewhere in the United States. People of America need the reassurance that everything is going to be all right and we look to our president for that reassurance. Being a president, Obama has to deliver great speeches, and the Statement on the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shootings, being one of them. First of all, the old-fashioned values and morals we impose on our children today are depleting. The line between being moral and immoral is becoming very blurry. Teachers are supposed to be important role models to the students as they continue to develop both mentally and emotionally. This occurs throughout the different stages of their lives. However, if the person who is supposed to be the child’s educator and mentor is shown to be in support of guns, then the message that they are sending to the students will be negative. Having guns goes against the morals we teach the children everyday about the negativity of violence “ It’s saying the only answer to violence is more violence. The only answer to guns is more guns” (CBC) By having teachers use more guns, as an answer to more guns, it brings out that violence is the answer to the problem at hand.…

It is a new era for education and school safety, now that President Trump is in office. His Secretary of Education nominee, Betsy DeVos recently had her Senate Confirmation hearing and answered all questions fluently and decorously. DeVos is clearly proficient in her subject matter; when asked whether or not schools should have guns, in light of the recent school shootings, DeVos took the time to reflect upon this complex and nuanced question and answered that guns need to be brought into schools to protect against the supposedly fatally common grizzly bear attacks. It was a well-thought out and competent response, but there was one small flaw in her thinking. What DeVos failed to realize was that there are far more school shootings than there…

Today, we are living in a world where one moment you are laughing, and in a blink of an eye you wind up either dead or in the hospital due to random gun violence. US leads amongst all the developed nations in mass murder due to gun violence and gun abuse. Between 1976 and 2012, most high-income countries did not experience a single shooting. The U.S. witnessed 16 shootings involving 7 or more fatalities, resulting in 241 deaths, more than all the other developed countries combined.…

The social issue that I have chosen for the essay is based on the mass shootings or gun violence that have happened in some schools and colleges in the United States, its effects on the gun rights and issues based on the 2nd Amendment. I found this topic to be interesting because in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting, the issue on the banning or control of gun ownership by the public is being strongly debated. Some claims that the 2nd Amendment of the United States Constitution which is stated as “A well regulated media regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed” (Cornell University Law School) clearly mentions…

Attention- getter: What would you do if somebody came into this classroom and pointed a gun at you as if they were going to kill you for no reason? First thing that would come to mind is, “Am I really going to die right now” and “Why is a person on campus with a gun trying to kill people?” Sad part is, an event like this has happened many times in the past. For instance, the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting as well as the Colorado movie theatre shooting that all took place within the past year[example]. These mass shootings have brought up the issue of controlling who is able to purchase guns and if it is safe and necessary to roam around in public armed with a weapon.…
