I decided to attend college because I wanted to find who I was and discover what I am capable of. I chose ECTC because it is close to home, affordable, and small. The advice I had received from my family concerning college was that I should get my required classes “out of the way” while I am still deciding on a career. I am not the first in my family to attend college, in fact, my mother went to college as she was raising both of my older sisters.

As a first generation college student I did not know what to expect from college. Sure I had heard plenty of stories from my peers and high school teachers, however, hearing a story and actually experiencing is very different. I had heard all too many times things such as- you will be more independent, be sure to ask a lot of questions, and most importantly college is very expensive. Whenever someone would talk about the tuition issue among different universities a certain question ways lingered in my head. I asked myself, “Is college worth it?”.…

College plays a role a student’s life, one of these roles are to help get students a better job that pays them a lot but that isn’t the only reason. According to Melisa McCreery “Higher education provides a number of benefits; most notably to the nation’s economic stability and job creation, civic engagement, and pulling students from low socioeconomic situation and landing them securely in middle class America.” In other words college is to help better a student’s life as well as to help them be able to contribute to society positively. I was placed on Academic Probation after my freshmen spring semester, I went to College with a new set of freedom I never had before and did not know how to adjust to my new freedom well. I come from a very large blended family and my parents worked very hard to provide for all of us, my mom had worked multiple jobs and was trying to continue her education so she would leave for work very early and would come home very late. That left the cooking, cleaning and tending to my younger brother to me all while I was a high school student, working 2 jobs and playing softball. With all that being said when I got to college I did not focus on school because for the first time in 4 years all I had to worry about was me and that was a strange relief…

Throughout high school, I had always envisioned myself in attending Texas A&M. There are still some extra steps I need to take but I know what my goals are and I’m going to do whatever it takes to achieve them. I know it’s not going to be simple but not impossible. My parents came to this country to work hard and better their lives for my brothers and me. My dad works too hard seven days a week and I look at how tired he is all the time. I want to be able to go to school, pursue my dreams, obtain my dream job and help other people. I want my parents to see that them working so hard and coming to America and leaving their entire family was worth it. I want to witness the happiness in my dads face when I walk across that stage at Texas A&M.…

It was at my aunt’s birthday party, when I made the decision to attend college. She asked me that day,” Mija, are you going to college?” At first I hesitated, “Si” . When I graduated high school I knew I was going to attend college. It wasn’t a question. It was instilled in me as a child that I would be the only one of my siblings to go to school. My brothers would be forced into the military. It was never a desire of mine to attend college. It was more like the expected next step. Needless to say my passion for school was null and void. I attribute my academic standing to this fact. Maybe if I'd thought about what I wanted to do with my life versus just going with what was expected I would've done a little better.…

The reason why I'm in college is because I want a better future for myself and to show my family that I can become somebody one day. Sometimes I would say to myself like “why am I even here? This place is not the place for me “. In other words college is not for everybody because not everyone who lives with their parents who can afford for tuition for college. But for me I realize that staying alone and not doing nothing for me was the biggest mistake I ever made as young adult at the age of nineteen. Soon as I turn 20 I decided that it was time for me to do something that’s going to be right for myself which was working and going to college. The first day of me attending college was amazing meeting new people and getting to know others such as colleagues.…

I think the reason why they want to get out of high school because it’s stressful and at least when you’re in college you can decide you don’t want to do it anymore and just drop out in high school you don’t have the option. Everyone is expecting you to be great and get good grades, get a scholarship, to know what you what you want to do in your life. So, it’s very stressful because I don’t know about other students, but it’s like being pressured to be the best because you need that scholarship and when you say you don’t want to go to college for whatever reason everyone is shocked and tells you to think twice about it because you’re too young and you don’t know what you're saying. We are pressured to do so much and know so much at this age and this time in our lives. High school is just one big audition for college and if you aren’t auditioning for it everyone looks down on you. For the other stuff yes we get it rules are rules no exception.…

“A college shows a man how little other people know. Education is not preparation for life, education is life itself.” During the interview with the college students or former ones, they all say that I must focus on my education if I want to pursue my dreams as a scientist or as a FBI agent. I believe that college is the best path for me after high school. This is because college can help give me a higher level education, get me a better job, and help me find my own path. After graduating in a college or a university, I want to work as a biologist, astronomer, or as a FBI agent.…
