Personal Narrative: The Water Polo Team
Attempting to juke the ravages thirsty for the ball, I gripped it tightly as the timer ticked down. As the rush of adrenaline filled my head, I plunged myself into the barricade of the six colossal men before the buzzer beater. Falling behind four points against our rival water polo team, everyone’s self-esteem was low. Our poor team coordination, lack of communication, and weakness of doubt and fear dragged us down. From never leading a team in any activity to being given the leadership position of the water polo team, my transition from an inexperienced rookie to someone who was looked up to by everyone was frightening. Despite the poor start and this fast transition, I pushed out away my fear and persevered.

We were the champions. Skating as fast as possible, I rushed from the blue line to the net where our goalie was. Our team dog piled on top of one another and screamed with joy. Cheering and crying rang throughout the entire arena. I was elated, tears streamed down my face as I hugged my teammates. After a few seconds, our team recognized that we needed to shake hands with the other team. I understood the defeat and sadness in the opposing teams’ eyes because earlier in the year, I lost to an underdog team in the soccer section final. After the hand shaking, I was a given a medal from my coach.…

I don’t know exactly where I am going. Maybe this comes as a shock to those who think that because someone has good grades, they have their live figured out. It astonishes me just how mistaken this view is. Being born in Cuba I was limited as to what options I had for my life path. Consequently, the transition from one country to another when I was just twelve years old was very frustrating and tough. Somehow I managed to get a grasp of the language and progressively ascend from the lowest English classes to the most advanced in my school. I never failed to be hard on myself though, and I apply this concept to almost everything I do. However, this way of thinking has not come at no cost. My thinking process can be quite obsessive at times.…

It’s game day, and the first time in twenty-three years that we might be able to defeat out school rivals, Turpin. But something didn’t feel like it should, after all it was the biggest day our team’s season. We had immense confidence in ourselves, being the higher raked state team, we expected to win this game then make a large tournament run. Little did we know that the rest of our season relied heavily on this game. Winning or losing this game would not end our season physically, but would emotionally ruin us, ultimately ending our season. The game began with a pleasant, almost soothing blow of the whistle and ended with the blood-curtailing screech of the referee’s dagger, sending shivers down my spin. The roar of our crowd stopped and…

All my life, i have been playing soccer. Everyone said education come first and sure I get that, but to me soccer is literally the most important to me. It’s like I can’t live without it. Station Camp was five yards from the end zone when our defense flattened the running back, sending the football to the hands of the tackler. Our defense scored on that play to win the game 26-20 in overtime. The tumultuous crowd became so loud, we couldn't hear each other on the field; but truthfully, we did not need to speak. Who we were spoke so loudly that we did not need to hear each other. Numerous predictions claimed we should have lost that game alongside our already fearful fans. After losing nineteen talented starters in the class above us, an immense void was left to fill by few seniors. So why did we keep playing? The answer is that the visceral integrity ingrained within us would never allow us cease believing in ourselves and let adversity control the outcome of the game.…

I was in 3rd grade and we were playing a game of soccer because we were in our soccer unit on thursday in the gym Ruby, one of my friends was kicking the ball down the gym floor, there was a big group near her, and I went to kick the ball from her to one of my teammates when I went and accidentally kicked her foot instead!! I was in so much pain I held my ankle gritting my teeth, “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” My head screamed, apparently her foot got hurt enough to the point because she told mr. salty (saltzgaber) and he said she was fine, the other team had scored the goal while me and ruby were just standing because both of our feet hurt but at least she could walk on her foot, then our soccer game was done it was time to go back to class.…

It was a very pleasant evening and I was at soccer practice at the South Barrington turf soccer fields. I loved to play soccer and I took it really seriously. Everything I do I go all out. There was no such thing as a second gear for me, I would always go 110 percent. When I was on the field, I could be looked at as a violent person and I would constantly get carded for rough play. During some of our matches I struck so much fear in my opponents they were afraid to guard me.…

The team got together the next week for the yearly season ending party. I walked into my coaches house with guilt still hanging on my shoulders. To my surprise though, no one seemed to be mad at me, even when I had lost us the game, and they had to be upset about not winning the championship title. When our captain had started to organize teams for a little kick-around session, I realized why no one was disappointed at me, or in general for that matter. It was possibly the pressure of winning or the excitement that I might finally live up to my sister’s standards, but somewhere along the way I had forgotten why my teammates and I played soccer in the first place. Although it would have been great, it wasn’t to gain a tournament title or win the game. It was because we all shared the love of the game. I didn’t need to receive a trophy or even come out with an underdog win to have fun playing soccer with some of my closest friends, but apparently I needed to freeze up to remember…

All I hear is parents screaming, teammates awaiting the time when we jog out onto the brick chip field, and our coach telling us where we are going to play and how he wants us to work our butts off trying to win. I smell the popcorn, nachos, pretzels, and mostly what I smell is sweat mixed with a dingy dirt. I’m thinking in my mind, “We all have to give it our all to win the game.” So I put on my dirt crusted, sweat smelling glove on and hustle out to the red brick chipped field.…
