“Just try it.” These were the words that my dad used to encourage me to try baseball. Before this moment, soccer was the only sport I played. Since I could remember, I have always enjoyed playing soccer; attending practices of my local recreational team . As a kid at the age of 7, I loved the rush of joining the kids from both teams to recklessly chase the same ball looking like a pack of headless chickens. I felt the parents had as much fun watching the game as the kids did playing the game. Despite my enjoyment of playing soccer, I was curious to find out if I would like any other sport.…

People ask me why I care so much. They tell me it’s just a game, get over it. But soccer has never been just a game to me. Soccer has been consuming my time, thoughts, and body since my parents signed me up for small-time recreational soccer twelve years ago that developed into extremely competitive travel soccer. They, perhaps unknowingly, threw me headlong into a life of traveling countless miles, long nights of practice, and an unforgettable amount of tears, sweat, and bloodshed. All which persisted over the course of my extensive soccer career.…

It all started at ninth street with some friends of mine John and I started recruiting some people to come play football with us. I honestly didn’t know I had a pretty decent arm. I originally was going to start practicing to play wide receiver instead of quarterback. At the time Odell Beckham Jr. ( wide receiver for the New York Giants ) was extremely explosive and dynamic on offense. Seeing him blow up on offense made me want to try out for wide receiver. But somehow John convinced me to play quarterback.…

I remember when I was five, I would always attend my step sister’s soccer games during the weekend while at my dad’s. I would always love to watch but I was more of a hands on person. I have always wanted to play soccer but unfortunately it was harder to do for a kid, like me, when I had divorced parents that lived 40 minutes away from each other. It was so hard because usually when it came to soccer, the games would be during the weekend and practices would be a few days during the week. Finally, after my sophomore year I decided to try again and play for my school.…

After we finished running, he divided us into our grades. I was a tenth grader, so I went with the tenth grade group. I played with them for a while when one of the coaches told me to go play with the bigger kids. I was so excited! I didn’t know anyone in their group, but I didn’t have to speak English to play with them, so I just played. When we finished our fast day of tryouts, the coach asked me where I was from, and I told him I am from Kenya. He said, “Alright, see you tomorrow.” The next day I came, we ran a lot, andI don’t even remember if we played soccer. When I went home, I was so exhausted that I just went to sleep. The tryout went for a while, and everyone was trying his best to make the school team. The time came for the coaches to choose the team. The whole way there I kept hoping that miraculously the game would be canceled. From the corner of my eye I saw the field lights emerging from behind the trees come into my view. Finally we parked and I got out of the car a knot resting in the pit of my stomach. With about 10 minutes until the game, I took my time walking over to the soccer field. As soon as my coach came into sight, he looked right at me. Before he even had the chance to blow his whistle and sarcastically tell me to “take my sweet time,” I hustled over. I plopped onto the bench next to my other teammates as they prepared themselves strapping on their shin guards and loaded up on water. I tied up my soccer cleats extra tight and tugged on my high blue socks, ready to get this game over with. Most of my other teammates got up and took a few last practice shots into the goal, which they never failed to score. Seeing them score with such ease, their eyes lighting up with confidence provoked the ambition and drive deep inside…
