Personal Military Application
This week’s personal application is a little hard to convert to the United States Army but I will give it my best stab. Our organizations differentiating factors that separate us for other militaries are the following:
• Technology used at lowest levels
• Deployment to incidents world wide within 24 hrs
• Air supremacy

The United States Army is heavily outfitted for combat in foreign wars. We are still one of the few nations in the world were every Soldier is issued night vision goggles. Infantry squads (6 infantry men) are issued a desert hawk (miniature Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) that can be unpacked from a briefcase and thrown in the air to monitor 4 city blocks from the sky. These advances in technology give the United States Army the upper hand in modern day combat.

The Secretary of Defense has decided to reduce the larger army units while investing more resources in smaller specialized units such as Special Forces Delta Company (Delta Force) and Navy Seals. These special units have the capabilities to respond to national incidents within hours (also due to geographical dispersion of units around the world).

The United States Air Force has captured the title as Air Kings since WWII. With United States having air supremacy we are able to provide quick initial contact to the enemy, deploy troops throughout the world and prevent foreign countries from infiltrating our homeland.

It has taken 65 years, but the US Army now emulates the German Wehrmacht. It now has squads based around two fire teams which have M249 SAWs or Squad automatic Weapons or light machine guns. We have learned that a smaller 9 man squad based around two light machine guns can produce more firepower with fewer men and are easier to handle and maneuver than the larger 12 man squad. The Germans learned this a long time ago.…

Following the increased number of casualties in World War II, proxy cold wars, and Gulf War, it became necessary to improvise military gear, which would limit the direct involvement of soldiers in a direct combat environment. Originally, a radical technology – the tank- proved decisive since soldiers could be taken to the heart of the war. However, as much as…

The U.S. Army plans on cutting 80,000 soldiers by 2013. This will be done by cutting the number of combat brigades from 45 to as low as 32. This restructuring comes as the Pentagon works on its 2013 fiscal year budget, which much reflect $260 billion in savings over the next five years. On January 26, 2012 senior DOD leaders released a new defense strategy, this is based on the current budget constraints. “This new strategy will focus on a smaller, leaner military that is agile, flexible, rapidly deployable, and more technologically advanced (Feikert & Henning page 5, 2012).” This new military will rebalance global presence, emphasizing where potential problems exist, such as Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. The new Army will also maintain a presence in Europe, Africa, and Latin America, developing new partnerships and strengthening key alliances.…

Military strength refers to the way that one nation has the ability to protect it own territory and people from external aggression and to pursue its interests abroad through conquest and expansion. For example, the United States military is one of the strongest and most effective militaries on the planet. This is partially because America pours a lot of money into its armed forces, partially it's because this large budget allows American soldiers to stay on the bleeding edge of technological advancement. It is the most technologically advanced military and overall it has the most powerful army, naval (including Marine Corps) and air force units in the world. It has about 1.3 million active military personnel ranking second in the world and with a military reserve of 1.4 million. It also has 450,000 paramilitary units. In total, it has 2.4 million troops. It ranks first in military spending in the world with $583 billion going into its military. The United States' Navy is the largest in the world and the United States' Air Force (or USAF) also happens to be the largest in the world. It is estimated that it has around 18,269 aircraft. The United States also has the second largest nuclear weapons arsenal in the world with 4075 active nuclear warheads and 5535 total warheads. It is truly the most powerful military in the world. Moreover, the US now has expanded its military to Australia. For example, Mr. Obama said the United States is now moving from the war on terrorism to economic and security issues in East Asia and the Pacific. Under the new agreement, the United States will deploy up to two thousand five hundred Marines to…

Military technology and strategies have constantly evolved throughout history. However, within the last few centuries, the world has seen warfare evolve at such a rapid rate, that it seems no two wars are fought the same. With ever-changing technologies, soldiers’ duties and skills have had to adapt along with them. Yet, soldiers are not the only ones who have been affected by changes in warfare. With the emergence of the Napoleonic and World Wars, the people of a given country became involved in an effort known as a “total war.” As World War II came to an end though, the major powers in the world would never again get into a “total war.” All in all, many technological advances and tactics, in recent history, have dramatically changed the way wars are fought. The events that have seen a dramatic change in technology and/or warfare are as follows: the Industrial Revolution, the Napoleonic wars, World War I, World War II, and the Cold War (Buzard, 2006).…
