Personal Essay On Lifeguard
For most of my summer’s during college, I worked at a Girl Scout camp as a lifeguard. It was one of my favorite jobs I ever, but sometimes it was also difficult. During my second summer, I received feedback from the Head Lifeguard, Hank, that challenged me as a lifeguard and personally. Every day, I delivered waterfront rules to the campers that came down to swim. Providing the rules and ensuring the campers understood them made sure that the campers stayed safe and that my fellow lifeguards and I would not need to use our training to save them. But since the groups were composed of young girls from grade school to high school, there was always lots of background chatter while rules were being given. This frustrated me. So I took a harder line with groups of girls that were talking over me. Eventually, a group leader complained to Hank that I was being too harsh on the girls. Hank then came up to me later, and told me about the complaint. He told me to be kinder while …show more content…
It upsetted me that the parent was blaming me for disciplining their children when the parents should have ensured that the children respected and listened to me. But I accepted Hank’s criticism and went back to the task that I was working on. At first, I stewed over it and became more upset with Hank for not telling the parent that the campers need to be more respectful to me while I was trying to give rules. I also complained to my sister and other coworkers about the parent and the campers for not respecting me. However, as I thought about it more, I realized that it was not my job to teach the children how to be respectful to people. It was to teach them the rules. So, I decided to work on my communication and work on teaching the children the rules in a way that was helpful, not harsh. That way they would respect me more and follow the rules because I was not raising my voice to be heard over them. I began working on my delivery and my

My mother told me at least once in my life to stop running around like a chicken with my head cut off, but once my foot hit the asphalt off of the bus, that is what I embodied. I got off of the bus and stumbled up the mountain of steps a plateau of red tile overlooking the parking lot. Parents crammed as far forward as possible like the front of a rock concert to attempt a potential glance at their child. Dragging my Santa Claus bag along with me, I dropped it in order to drink in the air around me. The problem was my bag fell on one of the upperclassmen in command during the summer; it turned out that she was the one who decided the grueling tasks of my day to day life during the summer. During the summer, it was suggested to me to stay below the radar and blend in with everyone. Needless to say that did not happen for…

Effective communication is vital when dealing with children and young people, in particular within the working environment, as it helps establish and maintain clear boundaries for the adolescents who are being dealt with. For example; if a young person is corrected on a behaviour that is negative, such as swearing, they need to see that staff follow the same rule, and that staff lead by example. Otherwise, they will see this as a contradiction of rules and will therefore lead to resentment and double standards.…

I am generally a well behaved kid. I don’t get angry easy but one thing that makes me mad is when I get in trouble for something I didn’t do. In ninth grade I sat between two kids, Ryan and Danny. I knew Ryan he was one of my good friends but, he has ADHD so he liked to mess around. I didn’t really know Danny so he did not talk to me much. I sat between them in the corner. They talked constantly to each other. Ryan would also always tell me jokes at random times and he would laugh at his own jokes. Since I was between them, the teacher would just assume that I was also talking. Eventually he moved my seat into the middle of the classroom next to a student helper. I hated going to that class because I was constantly getting pissed off.…

I had to seek out the appropriate adults to help with a variety of situations with this person so that situations could be not only resolved but prevented in the future. I feel that we were all given the additional opportunity to learn to read situations with other members of the group as to when we needed to compromise in order to reach a solution that was viable for all and not just one. While the Minecraft Club was part of the coding curriculum for our District, in the spring with the internet would slow to a crawl for state testing, students outside the club came to the conclusion that it was because of the Minecraft Club and not the infrastructure of the District’s networking that was slowing the internet down. As a small group, we came under attack to the point of that a group of students actually started a petition to have the club disbanded. It was difficult for a small group of five to battle a campus student body of approximately 1700 students. At first, we were all very angry but as we started to reach out to specific adults to assist us in how to handle being a minority on the back end of vocal majority, and a vocal majority that did not have…

They doubted that I could be a leader. Since none of them were my friends, or even had trust in me, they began to bully and mistreat me. They knew that they could get away with it because I had no friends to defend me and I was too meek to defend myself, at the time. This resulted in none of my instructions to the group being followed and the team not making any progress on the tasks assigned to us by our instructor. Facing certain failure, I resorted to letting a teammate named Tom, who had led the group in mocking me, take charge of the patrol.…

Some of us have issues with conforming and I believe I’m one of those people. The observation that I decided to conduct was that of a military setting. I decided to do this based on the fact that when I was in the military, there were times when I struggled with those appointed over me because I knew the tasks that they were giving me were wrong. I wasn’t willing to conform when I knew it wasn’t right. This is where my “issue” with authority came into play. The military is one of, if not the largest, organization that requires…

Since the beginning of the trimester, I have been volunteering three days a week in a second grade classroom at Oak Trace Elementary School. I have enjoyed every minute of my time here because I feel so appreciated by everyone that I help. Every day I walk in, I am greeted by the women in the office, and then I am usually waved to by a student in the hall on the way to my classroom. Once I get to the classroom, I am greeted in the best possible way by the students. Most of them will run up and hug me, and Mrs. Hall will always greet me and then put me to work. Lately, I have been leading math stations in the hallway. Mrs. Hall says that the kids often get very rowdy in the hallway, but that she trusts me to take authority in this kind of situation.…

No matter how bad my day has been, I walk out of that office with a smile, I need to greet the kids with excitement. I keep in mind that the weekly swim lessons may be the only thing that kids can look forward to. Children need a people in their life to show them that they care for them, these kids need to feel as though they have a purpose. The kids want to know that I’m excited to see them and want to teach them. It is one of my jobs to teach the children self-confidence, to make them feel as though they do have a purpose in life. I hop in that water every day and I truly try my best to make every single child I see feel special. It is my goal to make each and every one smile. At the end of the class, I sit them upon the wall and I have them all tell me something they enjoyed in the day and something they didn’t enjoy. It is a way for me to enhance my lessons and learn who they are, by knowing what they like or dislike. I high five every child before they leave for that day, ensuring them they all did a fantastic job and I’ll be looking forward to see them all next week. Children who feel as though people care for them and respect them, tend to be more respectful in life, this is why I try my best to provide children with as many developmental assets…

When I was approached by my principal, Mr. Jones, I was shocked, embarrassed, and upset. Shocked, that they had actually read as well as they did, but knew that they both could. Their fluency scores were certainly not high, in comparison to many other second graders, but higher for them. Embarrassed, that my principal was put in a position to confront me about my approach to helping my daughters. He also knew about all of my ongoing frustrations and concerns my husband and I have dealt with in trying to best meet our daughter’s learning needs at Trail Wind. Kids' Kamp is a week-long summer camp specifically for children who come from households that contain drugs and abuse. This is a place that provides the children with the needed interventions to achieve the best outcome upon returning home. The interns were guides to listen and give empathy. They are there to model proper behavior for these children. At first, I treated the children as if they were my family, with leniency and sympathy. These kids were unruly, rude, and defiant, I doubted if I wanted children. Moreover, if my so-called passion was to help kids in similar situations to them. As time went by, I realized I had to become strict and set firm boundaries for these kids to respect me as their counselor. I was just a teenager to them,…
